Letter to the Editor

GOP state convention did a great job

Saturday, July 3, 2010

Dear editor:

This past week nine delegates from Elmore County attended the Republican State Convention.

Most arrived Thursday afternoon or early Friday morning. The convention was from June 24-26 in Idaho Falls and had somewhere around 500 delegates from around the state. Everyone from Gov. Otter on down was there to help with the process of the convention.

During our time there we considered convention rules, over 40 new resolutions, checked the credentials of everyone attending and rebuilt the Republican platform to reflect the current times. We also elected state officers to serve on the State Central Committee.

The days were long and the work was tedious but quite refreshing. All the various committees completed their work on Friday and then submitted their proposals to the entire delegate assembly on Saturday for passage. Some were approved and some were not. All in all I think we kept the best of everything.

The most gratifying thing for me was the number of young people there. I was amazed to see the Grand Old Party with so much young enthusiasm. It was good to see. According to what I heard it was the biggest Republican Convention most can remember in Idaho. I can assure you the Elmore party was well represented.

The Elmore County Republican Central Committee received, I think, their first 5 Star Award ever. It is five things that must be done during the year to be eligible for this award. Elmore County did all five and received the award.

A big thank you must be given to all the Precinct Chairman and Assistant Precinct Chairman who helped receive this award. A special thank you to Barry Peterson for his leadership, to Bunny Farnham for taking care of all the secretarial duties and to Chris Pentico as vice chairman of the central committee. Thank you to all the elected district people for serving in the capacities they serve. The many hours you put in are appreciated.

There was a lot of work accomplished during this convention. All the approved resolutions will now head to our legislature in Boise and hopefully some of them will become law.

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all the people of Elmore County for your support. I want to assure you we will continue to represent you as your elected representatives on the Elmore County Central Committee. We look forward to an interesting year with many challenges and a lot of work.

If you have questions please feel free to contact your precinct chairman at any time. It is our job to help you with the political process and give you all the information you require. You are always welcome to attend our central committee meetings on the forth Thursday of every month in the conference room of your new jail.
