UPDATE -- Authorities capture suspect following day-long search

Monday, June 7, 2010
Miguel Laquerica

An hour after authorities had called off a four-hour search Monday for a wanted man in the subdivisions above Legacy Park, a citizen flagged down a patrol car and alerted them to the possible presence of the suspect in a car going down Canyon Creek Road.

Deputies and city police quickly converged on the scene and shortly after 3 p.m. arrested Miguel Laquerica, 29, of Nampa, whom they had been seeking since he fled a traffic stop earlier in the day.

Sergeant Humberto Fuentes Jr. with the Mountain Home Police Department had made a traffic stop for running a stop sign or light in the area of Paul's Market at approximately 10 a.m. on a 1996 Red GMC Yukon driven by a male subject later identified as Laquerica.

Once Sgt. Fuentes made contact with the subject and returned to his patrol vehicle to verify drivers status, the subject left the scene in his vehicle heading north on North 3rd East Street.

Sgt. Fuentes pursued Laquerica to the north side of town at the end of North 3rd East St., where he jumped out of his vehicle and fled the scene on foot.

A stolen handgun allegedly was found in the vehicle.

Both city police and Elmore County Sheriff's Office deputies converged on the scene, several times spotting the suspect, who continued to elude them by jumping over privacy fences in the subdivisions in the area and running through back yards.

At one point he was believed to have hidden in a house where the occupants were not at home.

While Laquerica remained at large, residents in that section of town were urged to secure their homes and close their garage doors, a basic precaution authorities said all area residents should practice whenever they are not home.

A "reverse 911" notice was sent out to residents in the area through MyStateUSA.com at about 1 p.m. It is the first time the Elmore County Sheriff's Office dispatch has ever used the system.

After more than three hours of conducting a ground search by deputies and city police in an attempt to locate Laquerica, authorities called off the official search, releasing some officers for other duties, but city and county officers continued to patrol the area.

About an hour later a citizen alerted police to the possible presence of Laquerica in a white car on Canyon Creek Road. He was found hunkered down in the back seat, and taken into custody without further incident.

Two other individuals in the car, who were not immediately identified, have been detained for questioning in connection with the ongoing investigation. The vehicle had Ada County plates on it.

Laquerica is wanted in Canyon County for a probation violation involving an assault on a police officer.

I say taser him and let the dogs have a small snack when they catch him. Anyone that asaults a police officer gets what they dish out.

  • Yet another felon from outside of Elmore County heard we have a new jail. We shouldn't have advertised our new jail and soft prosecutors we have here. We seem to be attracting the scum like a bug-zapper attracts mosquitoes.

  • Please confirm that the suspect was still at-large when they called off the search. A reliable source within the subdivision has informed me that he was caught.

  • I live in the subdivision above Legacy Park. I don't know if anyone else received the reverse 911 call but I sure didn't and my neighbor didn't either. Had it not been for another neighbor we wouldn't have known anything.

  • I am grateful that the police were persistant in attempting to find this guy and no one got hurt. I happened to be outside talking with a neighbor and watched the car chase turn into a foot pursuit behind our property. Thankfully I was able to make use of our security system which helped to ease the anxiety of the whole situation. We did not recieve a phone call either to inform of us of the situation although in my opinion, having been at home knowing about the guy on the run at 830am, this information would have been nice to have prior to 1pm. Once the commotion behind the house settled down I popped out to check to make sure the guy was caught and was informed that he had not, but it is concerning that had I not been paying attention to what was taking place I would not have known that the area was still unsafe. While Mt. Home is a small town and this type of occurence is often rare it does seem that we as a community need a better flow of communication from law enforcement to residents in these situations to ensure our safety. Making phone calls to the police station to gather this information is probably more of a nuisance for dispatch when there are so many other things that need to be tended to.

To those that should have received a call, I suggest you call either Elmore County Dispatch or the E911 Office and let them know you never received a call. As this was the first time the reverse 911 was used, they need to know about any problems.

  • this is why "everyone" need to keep a gun handy at all times nowadays.

He's luckly he did not come too my house

Forget 911, just be ready for the next jerk

Can someone please confirm the whole 10 AM thing. I was driving by the PD at approx 8:15 when everyone started flying past. I turned on the scanner, and they were already starting to set up a perimeter.

    Something isn't adding up.

  • I don't think the times are correct in the article I thought it was roughly 830 when the foot pursuit started at the end of 3rd. I'm not sure where the timeline came from but it doesn't seem to be accurate.

  • It started sometime between 8:00 - 8:30 am I just happened to have our scanner on. The paper is wrong on when he was first pulled over at Paul's. He then took off in his car, later he ditched the car and was on foot.

  • Who cares what time it happened...I personally think the article gives up to much information, it is like they copied the police report.....ridiculous! He is caught, that's all that matters!

  • MHRaised,

You bring up a very valid point; the most important thing is the fact that he is caught. However, the timeline is important to others for various reasons. For me personally, the timeline is of concern for two reasons 1) when in the area concerned for the safety of yourself and others the extra hour and a half seems like forever, and 2) simple credibility and reliability of the news we as the community are receiving, knowing that this information is incorrect in this story makes me question the accuracy of other stories reported in the paper.

  • If you want to know if he is in custody confirm the facts yourself and call the jail... It's that simple...

  • the city police PIO should have had all the information anyone would want. If there was a question, he should have been called. He should have had all the latest information and should have put out a news release.

  • As a 26 year army veteran and victim of domestic violence of idaho I can honestly say that the people writing their comments in this article have no life, They just sit at home all day and gossip about their neighbors and falsely assume the worst about every body. These same individuals violate laws just as serious as this one, Stalking, intimidating innocent bi-standers and invading their privacy. The Truth of the matter is we have a U s and idaho constitution which suppose ably grants each of us rights, the problem we have is the real criminals of justice or crime are never read about in the news paper because they are protecting and denying victims of violance and crimes their rights. Everyone is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. A prime example of protecting the real criminal is dealing with my situation, My ex-wife strangled and beat me, she distroyed the telephones to stop me from calling the police. when the police arrived I was arrested because I was the Man and in Idaho that is the Law. This was told to me by the arresting officer personally. I was found not guilty by a jury and Ever since then I have been denied all my civil, constitutional and victim of violence rights as well as recieving justice to have my agressors held accountable for their behavior - all because of a law that is illegal it self. So don't judge other people unless you know the facts
