Rotary Club seeks donations for memorial

A memorial similar to this one will be located at a new city park off Highway 20.

The Rotary Club of Elmore County is working in partnership with the City of Mountain Home to place an M-1 Abrams tank, a "veteran" of the Gulf Wars, in a new city park being created off Highway 20 north of I-84 and just past the entrance to the National Guard Armory.

But it will need some donations from the public to make it a reality.

The tank site is designed as a memorial "to the many men and women who fought and are still fighting for our country in the Gulf War combat zone since 1990," a Rotary Club spokesperson said.

There is an M47 Patton tank on display at a park in Nampa. They have it behind a chain link fence. Unfortunately they turned the turret backwards, so the gun is pointing to the back of the tank! (I guess because it made the tank more compact).Let's hope our tank is displayed the right way. The tank in the picture has the gun oriented properly

In my hometown of Rupert, they have a Sherman from WWII displayed in Neptune Park. I used to play on it as a kid. No fence and no graffiti. If anyone had caught kids defacing the memorial, they would have been dealt with appropriately.

Ahhh the good old days, where you faced a butt whoopin' from your parents for doing bad things!!

  • I remember playing on the sherman in Twin Falls and seeing the Tank in Rupert as a kid. I would love to see the display in our town. I know the fence is a requirement now and that is a shame but it would be nice to take the grandkids to see the tank. And nice to see the Army represented in this Air Force town. Now if we can get a submarine like Arco that would be great.
