Teen hit by car

Wednesday, January 13, 2010

A 15-year-old female was hit by car on Main Street near Albertson's at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday.

She was one of three students, all wearing dark clothing in the dark early-morning hours, who had gathered there prior to school.

Two of the youths ran out in front of oncoming traffic, according to witnesses, city police Sgt. Rick Viola said.

The car involved in the incident, a 2005 grey Cadillac, slammed on its brakes. Then, Viola said witnesses told police, as the car began to move forward again, the female ran out in front of the it. "The witnesses said there was no way the car could stop," the police sergeant said.

The car was moving about 5 mph when it struck her, knocking her to the ground. She was taken to Elmore Medical Center with what was believed to be a minor hip injury. She had reported to authorities at the time that she also believed she had a head injury.

"People need to use crosswalks," Viola said, "and always watch out for oncoming traffic."

  • She should get a ticket for J-walking since she was not in a crosswalk. She (her parents) should have to pay to any damage to the vehicle. Just like drives need to pay attention so do pedestrians, even if she had been in a crosswalk metal wins over flesh everytime.

Jaywalking is not against the law here so no ticket there, even if you are in a crosswalk you are still taking your life in your hands young or old makes not difference, those white lines don't mean much to most drivers. You can be cited for not stopping for someone in a crosswalk but the police have to see it but in the same word people that run in front of vehicles even in a crosswalk lack poor judgement also.

  • First off it doesn't say anywhere in the story that she wasn't in the crosswalk. I have been at that corner in the mornings and see approximately 90% of the vehicles on that road speeding and not paying attention. I almost got side swiped by an individual in a small car because they weren't paying attention at that corner. I have a massive SUV so there is no way they couldnt see me. Yes, she should pay attention better and her parents should whoop her butt for wearing such dark clothing.

  • Well Sgt Viola has your "FIRST OFF" he wouldn't have said people need to use the crosswalks if she was hit in one. If she was in a crosswalk I'm pretty sure that would have been reported in the story. In addition the dark clothing wouldn't be as big an issue if she was in a crosswalk as most crosswalks are pretty well lighted, usally at intersections. But hey teenagers know everything and they are never wrong due to thier vast life experiences.

  • It's sad that happened, but the question is: why all of a sudden did she dash out into the street?Did the bus show up? was she talking on a cell phone at the time?or was the driver on a cell phone? Because everyone knows that a person on a cell phone can't do more than one thing at a time.
