Keep nuke plant out of Elmore County

Wednesday, January 13, 2010

Dear editor:

We, the citizens of the high desert and temperate mountains, are best served by those who propose clean, renewable energy for the expansion of the local economy. The proposal to make the Snake River a nuclear reservation by a group of speculators has been an absolute fiasco (2009's Top Stories).

The use of nuclear fission to produce commercial electricity is the ugly stepchild of the Cold War. The bomb makers never solved the nuclear waste problem and neither have the makers of nuclear power plants. Their "final solution" is to store waste on site for the life of a plant and then ship the waste and the contaminated plant to Idaho. Hey, look it up.

Years ago, the voters of Elmore County rejected the placement of smokebelching coal plants in their back yard and we will reject any rezone that allows a nuke.

Local politicians should heed the will of the people over the false promises of a cabal of greedy, self-serving, out-of-state land-grabbing crapshooters.
