Airbase van on field trip with kids rolls on I-84

Wednesday, July 15, 2009

Six people, two adults and four children, on a field trip from Mountain Home AFB, were injured when the van in which they were riding blew a tire and rolled on I-84 at milepost 106 early Wednesday afternoon at about 12:30 p.m.

None of the injuries were initially reported as being life-threatening, but one female passenger was reported to have suffered a compound fracture of her leg.

This van from the base, on a field trip to Glenns Ferry, rolled at least once and came to rest on its side.

Four of the victims were taken by ground ambulance to Elmore Medical Center. Two others were transported from the scene by air ambulance. The helicopters landed at milepost 109, the nearest safe spot to land, and the victims needing that service were transported from the accident site to the helicopters.

There were initial reports that the van had caught on fire, prompting the Glenns Ferry Volunteer Fire Department to be dispatched to the scene, but first responders were able to put it out with a fire extinguisher.

The van was headed from the youth center on base to the Elmore County Fair, at the time of the accident.

One lane of eastbound I-84 was closed for just under an hour while rescue crews worked at the scene, causing traffic to back up temporarily.

No further details were immediately available.
