Family from base involved in crash that kills Adams Count deputy

Tuesday, July 7, 2009

A Mountain Home AFB man and his family were involved in a fatal car crash Monday afternoon near New Meadows that killed an Adams County deputy sheriff.

At approximately 4:25 p.m., Deputy Monte "Leroy" Matthews, 35, of New Meadows, was on routine patrol on US95 at milepost 153, near the community of Tamarack near New Meadows, when he was involved in a collision with a southbound 2003 Honda Odyssey Minivan, driven by Mark Zampogna, 39, of Mountain Home Air Force Base. Matthews succumbed to his injuries at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time.

Zampogna and the other passengers in his vehicle, Jennifer Zampogna, 35, Nicole Zampogna, 9, and Dominic Zampogna, 7, were all transported by air and ground ambulance to area hospitals to be treated for their injuries. He was listed in critical condition Tuesday morning. The conditions of his family members were not available.

Zampogna is a captain with the 366th Operations Support Squadron.

Commercial Tire in Mountain Home, 330 S. Main St., will be taking donations for the Zampogna family and will be matching those donations with its own funds.
