Leanna Whitney

Leanna Whitney will be stepping down as treasurer for the city of Mountain Home after 21 years of service.

Whitney has accepted a position as vice president of finance, human resources and communications for Northwest Lineman College in Meridian. The college, run by her nephew, Aaron Howell, is undergoing a major expansion, with additional colleges in California, Texas and other sites in the southwest United States.

Mayor Tom Rist said the city will begin a national search for her replacement.

Whitney will remain in her present post until a replacement is selected. She said she anticipates leaving by the time the current budget process is completed and published in July.

Whitney was originally appointed as city treasurer by the late Mayor Don Etter, and under the term of Mayor Joe B. McNeal her duties were expanded to include serving as the city's human resource director.

She admitted that a lot has changed in the 21 years she has served the city. "When I started, we didn't use computers. It was all done manually, with ledgers."

In addition to her service with the city, Whitney served as a legislator for three terms, from 1986 to 1992.

Before working for the city she had been a bookkeeper at Hall, Friedly and Ward. She began her career in finances when she was 14, working as a bookkeeper for her family's business, Whitney Transfer and Storage.

She said that at present she plans to continue living in Mountain Home.
