Nuke plant owners can't deliver what they promise

Wednesday, April 22, 2009

Dear editor:

What does it mean to promise 5,000 local jobs in Elmore County? Elmore County has an unemployment rate of about 6.5 percent. That means there are around 750 unemployed. So do 5,000 local jobs mean 4,000 new "locals" in our county? Does it mean all of our local businesses best employees will leave their jobs to make more at a nuclear plant?

Do we even have any guarantees that our local residents would make more money at the proposed nuclear plant? For that matter, are there any guarantees that AEHI will be the one making those decisions?

In their filing with the Security and Exchange Commission, AEHI states, "Management expects it is unlikely the Company will be the ultimate owner or operator of any reactor to be built at any site."

So how can we trust them now, if they don't even plan to operate the facility? Glenns Ferry is lucky to have a new bio-diesel plant coming to our area and employing our residents. So, ask yourself, why do we need a nuclear plant on the Snake River that we all love and enjoy.

Do we really want to live next to next to highly radioactive waste that puts our local farms and water at risk and may decrease the value of our crops?

The answer is we don't need a nuke plant and I hope you will take the time to tell our County Commissioners as much on April 22.
