Pomerlee to try out for pro football squads

Wednesday, April 8, 2009

Mountain Home High School graduate Anthony Pomerlee, an NFL hopeful, will be attending the 2009 Elite Combine this coming May.

Pomerlee started his football career at Mountain Home High School as the team's running back during the 2002-2004 season.

After high school, his desire to continue to be involved in football led him to an assistant coaching position for the Rimrock Raiders under Head Coach Clark.

Pomerlee found an opportunity to actively play football again when he discovered Boise had a semi-professional league that competes with other northwestern states.

He joined what was then the AA Idaho Matadors (now known as the AAA Treasure Valley Spartans).

In the 2006 season, Pomerlee was ranked in the top two in rushing and total yards and in 2007 was awarded top honors in total rushing yards and most total yards in the league.

In all three seasons he has played with the team, Pomerlee has been named Team MVP and has been invited to play in the league's All Star game.

The AAA team, the Treasure Valley Spartans, has a larger membership, including more college alumni, and is expected to have an undefeated season, adding a championship title to its accomplishments.

Pomerlee said he has learned so much from the Matador/Spartan coaching staff, including his father-in-law, Offensive Coordinator Cameron Hale, that he believes he is "ready to move to a higher level of competition."

He has been working with Levi Madarieta, a professional trainer and former NY Giant.

Pomerlee will be trying out for the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League on May 3 in Portland, Ore., and will attend the Pro Elite Combine in Los Angeles, Calif., on May 9.

In order to help raise money for the trips, Pomerlee has organized two car washes to be held on Saturday, April 11 and 18, at the Pizza Hut on Airbase Road.

Members of the community who wish to help with funds for the trip can make a donation to the Anthony Pomerlee account at Washington Mutual Bank.
