Jerome defeats Mountain Home 67-41

Wednesday, December 17, 2008

A poor second half effort by Mountain Home led to a 67-41 non-conference boys basketball loss to the Jerome Tigers at Jerome last Tuesday.

Jerome shot out to a 5-0 lead but Mountain Home battled back to take their first lead, 13-12, on a trey by Chris Maholick. The lead went back and fourth with Mountain Home up 23-21 after a quarter.

A 7-0 run by Jerome to start the second quarter gave them a lead they would not lose the rest of the evening. Mountain Home managed to get within three, 36-33, with 1:06 left in the half, but Jerome hit the final five points of the quarter to take a 41-33 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Mountain Home came out flat in the third quarter, turning the ball over 11 times, missing all seven field goal attempts, and managing just a free throw by D.J. Elliott in the quarter as Jerome upped their lead to 59-34.

Dallin Dean's basket with 6:30 left in the game was Mountain Home's first field goal of the second half, coming some nine and a half minutes into the half. Mountain Home could come no closer than 25 points and lost 67-41.

"They're a pretty good team, and they were at home, and I thought the first half we gave up 41 points -- that's a pretty good pace -- the fortunate thing the first half was we were able to keep up with that, somewhat, and it wasn't a blowout at the halftime," said Tiger basketball coach Tony Kerfoot.

"I thought they stepped it up a little bit second half, we didn't -- our first three possessions turned into lay-ins for them. We tried to regroup, but it didn't happen -- one point in the third quarter, that gets you blown out."

Alex Campbell and D.J. Elliott both scored in double figures. Campbell had 13 and Elliott 11. Chris Maholick added six points, Danny Snelgrow five, Logan Monasterio four, and Dallin Dean two.

Mountain Home shot just 22 percent (4/18) in three-point attempts, and hit 37 percent (13/35) of their two-pointers. They hit 50 percent (3/6) of their free throws.

Jerome hit 23 percent (5/22) treys, and a sizzling 55 percent (21/38) inside the arc. They hit 71 percent (10/14) from the free-throw line.

The two teams met again last (Tuesday) night in Lloyd Schiller Gymnasium. The Tigers close out their pre-Christmas holiday schedule with their conference opener at Middleton this Friday.
