Foul trouble helps Lady Tigers lose in overtime

Wednesday, November 19, 2008

The Mountain Home Lady Tigers jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first half, but watched the lead disappear in the fourth quarter as Mountain View battled back to force overtime, and the Lady Mavericks prevailed 50-47 last Saturday afternoon in Lloyd Schiller Gymnasium.

Mountain Home jumped out to an early lead, and led 14-5 after a quarter. They took a 26-16 lead into the locker room at halftime and maintained a 10-point lead, 33-23, heading into the fourth quarter.

Fouls plagued the Lady Tigers all night and they started to add up in the fourth quarter, as by the time the game was over Mountain Home lost four players -- three starters -- to fouls. Not only that, but the Lady Mavericks were converting the free throws into points as they battled back to tie the game at 42-42 and force overtime.

In the overtime period, Mountain View managed to outscore the Lady Tigers 8-5 to come away with the win.

Mountain Home Lady Tigers head basketball coach Brent Keener said it was a tough one to lose.

"We finished the game with three starters that fouled out and another one that played a bunch that fouled out, so it was difficult."

Coach Keener did like the way they started the game and got up on Mountain View like they did through the first three quarters.

"That first quarter and a half that we played, we were up 24-9 at one point, it shows how well we can play, but we definitely have to finish. We shot 6-23 from the free-throw line, so if we make those, we don't have to go to overtime, because Mountain View went 27-34. It was a foul-fest, but we've got to make our free throws."

Angie Rios and Dakota Barrie led a balanced scoring attack with eight points apiece. Shelby Posey added six points, Jasmyn Jewett, Francesca Hale and Charde Huntington each had five, Blas Lord and Rachel Warila both scored four, and Brenda Hawkins netted two points.

The Lady Tigers have three games this week. They hosted Jerome last night (Tuesday), travel to Timberline tomorrow night (Thursday), and host Wood River for an afternoon game at 2 p.m. Saturday.
