Letter to the Editor

A pool is a good start

Wednesday, November 5, 2008

Dear editor:

I am writing in response to the letter written by Tamzy House regarding the planned facilities by the WECRD committee for the community.

I agree wholeheartedly with Mrs. House that there needs to be "something for everyone."

However, when doing a project this large, one has to begin with something smaller, and add on as the funds become available.

I was on that original committee that distributed petitions around the community to determine the people's first choice of where to start. An indoor swimming pool was the greatest choice of all ages.

Living in various states where there were community recreational facilities operated by the local governments, I was able to experience the greatest needs.

I lived in towns which built the swimming facilities first. The schools which had no swimming pools, could use the pool for classes in swimming, diving, and life saving. The senior living facilities bussed their residents over for water aerobics.

With ramps down into the water, the pool was accessible to those physically or mentally challenged. Also, there were aerobic classes for others in the community. There was a time for lap swimming and recreational swimming. Water polo provided fun and exercise for many. Occasionally there would be a night the kids had inner tubes and watched a movie from the water. Babies up through 90 years old can use a pool.
