Reader demands County publicizes nuke plant meeting

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

Dear editor:

I'm writing to express my hopes that the county commissioners do not rezone land for a nuclear power plant.

Ultimately, it's preserving our precious Snake River and the problem of waste that makes me reluctant about nuclear energy in general. In addition, I have deep reservations about the particular company Mr. Gillaspie represents.

From what I've read and learned, neither he nor his company are what I feel are good for Elmore County. They have misled many people and only say, arrogantly, that anyone who has questions is hysterical and is uneducated. I am not hysterical at all. I am not college educated, but I don't mislead people about it, as Mr. Gillaspie has done. And I would never threaten land owners with the forced takeover of their land, again as Mr. Gillaspie has done. (Who gave him the idea he could get people's land even if they don't intend to sell?)

I value my ability to vote my conscience, and I have to say that in the future I can never vote for any person who is now serving on the county commission if that land is rezoned or the commission in any other way abets this proposal. Some things are just wrong, and this company in Elmore County is very wrong.

I hope the commission advertizes about the public hearing on the subject. So far I have found no specific date or time. Shame on the commissioners if they don't publicize the hearing well enough for all to know about it.
