Harry Max Hannig, 93, of Mountain Home, died May 2, 2008, with his family by his side, at the home of his daughter, Erika, and son-in-law, Edger Junger.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 12, at Rost Funeral Home, McMurtrey Chapel in Mountain Home.

Harry was born Aug. 21, 1914, in Berlin, Germany, to Max and Martha (David) Hoffmann.

He was schooled in Germany and later joined the German military in which he was a tank battalion commander, then becoming a sergeant major during WWII.

Harry met his wife, Frieda Guendel, in Sagan, Germany. They were married on June 13, 1942. In 1943, their only child, Erika, was born.

During Harry's service, he was severely wounded and after his convalescence of a year and a half and the Russian invasion of Germany, he moved his family back to Berlin where they resided until his wife passed away. In 1993 his daughter moved him to Mountain Home to live with her and her husband and to be close to his grandchildren, Ralph and Ramona, and great-granddaughter Chelsea.

He liked Mountain Home, and knew it well since he and his wife visited their daughter and family about every two years and stayed with them during the summers. Harry especially liked going fishing on his boat, with his son-in-law at Strike Dam and Anderson Reservoir. He also loved staying at their cabin in Pine on the Boise River, his family said.

Harry is survived by: his daughter, Erika, and her husband, Edgar Junger, of Mountain Home, two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
