School bond will benefit students

Wednesday, February 6, 2008

Dear editor:

I guess Mr. Hutterman did not watch the Super Bowl last weekend! All professional athletes were once student athletes! And he must not like television or movies much either! Even the nightly news benefits from broadcasters, camera men, lighting technicians and others that had an opportunity to use a stage, auditorium or gymnasium in high school! His editorial letter about the school bond issue was way off the mark!

First, and most importantly, the school bond issue is about more than just the gymnasium and auditorium. There are provisions for new educational classrooms and new vocational classrooms. This will relieve the overcrowding at our lower level schools (Hacker) and give all students more opportunities to improve their education.

Secondly, student athletes and those that are involved in band, choir, drama, debate, dance and other pursuits that would benefit from a new gymnasium and a new auditorium are some of the star students at our schools! To participate in these activities they must carry a full academic class load and maintain and appropriate GPA! They are usually more involved in our community because they are "coached" in responsibility, leadership and teamwork! They are working hard toward their future.

As the television commercial states: "Collegiate student athletes will go on to some other career field other than sports!" These students are our future, also! They are representatives of our schools and our town. Do they not deserve a decent facility to play their games or present their events? Do we not want to show other schools and districts that we have pride in our student athletes and other student performers?

On the same day that our school bond failed, Kuna passed a bond for a new high school. I know it includes a gymnasium and auditorium just like what we need. I have been to other high schools where there are newer and better facilities for students, but guess what, I was not in their classrooms, I was in their gym or auditorium.

Mr. Hutterman also did not read where Mr. McMurtrey stated that the gymnasium is required to meet the standards set by the state. I guess it is OK for Glenn's Ferry to have student athlete go on to compete in professional sports, just as long as we don't improve our facilities here at Mountain Home!
