McKenna students volunteer to help clean up city residence

Wednesday, November 28, 2007
Students and staff helped an ill local resident comply with city ordinances.

Students from Richard McKenna Charter High School have again donated their time to help a local citizen come into compliance with city ordinances being enforced by Janice Kelly.

With Kelly helping, the group worked for three hours and cutting tree branches, raking the entire property, trimming the shrubs, and doing other work on the property.

Kelly is a city employee responsible for enforcing city ordinances, especially those involving property issues that violate city codes. When a property owner, due to age, illness or for some other special reason, is unable to bring their property into compliance, Kelly has worked to find volunteers to help.

The students that contributed during last week's effort were: Shannon Milburn-Staggs, Sijifredo Juarez, Jarrod McKee, Michael Rock, Michael May, Steven May and Anthony Erwin.

They were joined by faculty member Jose Luis Madarieta. The property, located on South 11th East Street, is owned by an individual undergoing chemotherapy for cancer.

  • Richard McKenna is a wonderful school and as you can see, the students continue to do wonderful things. Most of them will go on to become citizens that contribute to the general wellbeing of our world in one way or another thanks in great part to the leadership and guidance of the staff. If I could entirely bypass the public school system and simply have my children attend Richard McKenna I would in a heartbeat. At that school you are part of a family , not simply a student number to be shoved through the system as quickly as possible. I grow prouder every day to be a graduate of Richard McKenna.

  • The school is wonderful. It makes the students want to learn. The school also has very strict rules and standards which enhances the learning environment. If more schools enforced the same standards I wonder how different things would be.

And to the students who volunteered for this clean up job, more power to you. You really did a wonderful thing.
