Three die in I-84 accident

Tuesday, November 27, 2007

Three Minodoka County residents died on an icy I-84 ten miles west of Mountain Home Monday morning, when their 1997 Chevrolet Blazer went off the road into the median, rolled several times, and came to rest upright in the eastbound lane of the interstate

Nannette Haag Miller, 56, of Heyburn, was traveling westbound just before 8 a.m. at milepost 80.5 on I-84 when her vehicle left the road in an area where icy conditions had been reported earlier in the day.

One passenger was ejected from the vehicle while it rolled, and authorities believe all three occupants of the blazer were killed instantly. Also killed were Donna Haag, 76, from Heyburn, and Eric Haag, 81, from Heyburn.

Seat belts were worn by the driver and front seat passenger but were not worn by the rear seat passenger.

The roadway was completely blocked for approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. All lanes were re-opened by 10:15 a.m. The Idaho Transportation Department was able to divert traffic from I-84 on to Simco Road during the closure of the I-84 eastbound lanes.

The crash is still under investigation and is being handled by Idaho State Police Tpr. J. Klitch with assistance from Cpl. Eller and Tpr. Szeles of the ISP Collision Reconstruction Unit and Elmore County Deputies.

Elmore County Sheriff's Deputies and Idaho State Police worked a large number of accidents on I-84 Monday, most due to icy or slick road conditions.

North of Mountain Home a snow floor was reported on Highway 20 from Cat's Creek Summit north, south of Mountain Home fog and icy conditions have been reported almost every morning for a week in the Bruneau-Grand View area and east of Mountain Home from Hammett to the Elmore County line.

Similar road conditions are expected through much of this week and authorities are advising drivers to be particularly careful during early morning hours.
