Letter to the Editor

City candidates asked about growth

Wednesday, October 3, 2007

Dear editor:

(The following is an open letter to the city council and the council candidates).

I have reviewed the city's Strategic Plan and have some concerns. I am supportive of the plan and hope that you will continue to use it when making your decisions. I am available to discuss these concerns and any way that I can help in these efforts.

"Our Vision…

New development encourages community diversity while sustaining a quiet and friendly small-town atmosphere.

Includes an attractive and prosperous downtown area that is recognized as the center of social, cultural and historical identity and an important part of the community's economic activity."

I am concerned that strip mall style retail development on American Legion, Airbase Road, and Sunset Strip does not meet this vision for downtown Mountain Home.

I am for new development but I am asking how the City Government can encourage this development in the downtown area?

"Downtown Parking- Renovate/Reconstruct Park/Old Farmers Whse property into off-street parking area"

What is the status of these projects?

I feel that the need for additional parking and the need to improve the appearance of the downtown area are important to encourage new businesses and to take advantage of the tourist traffic visiting our area. How can the City Government work better to complete these projects?

The condition of many empty and burned out retail buildings is a deterrent to tourism and downtown development.

How can the City Government use its resources to build a pride in maintaining "an attractive and prosperous downtown area"?

I feel that a requirement for a low cost business license would ensure that all businesses are properly informed of zoning, signage, parking, and all other city requirements and laws.

This also would allow the economic development office to maintain database of existing businesses in the city.

What is your opinion of a business license requirement for all commercial businesses in the city limits?
