Letter to the Editor

County needs better health care

Wednesday, October 3, 2007

Dear editor:

This letter is addressed to any or all county representatives that feel they are qualified to answer these questions honestly and justifiably.

My husband is currently employed by Elmore County. I recently called to inquire about adding our two children and myself to his health insurance plan. I was absolutely shocked to learn that it would cost us $474 a month out of pocket to add me and a total of $654 to add our children to his plan. This quote did not include vision and dental.

So here are the questions.

First, how in the world would we be expected to pay that type of premium with the measly wage the county offers its deputies?

Secondly, why is it that our tax dollars help pay for medical, vision and dental care for the criminals in our county jail but the county cannot offer a reasonable health care plan for the families of its employees? Also, why is it that we pay for the funeral of an inmate that commits suicide while in custody to prevent lawsuits only to then have our county sued? Although I am sorry for the families' loss I hardly believe the county is responsible for the choice of an adult man.

I understand that the operation of the correctional system is not solely in the hands of our county. However, is there not one county representative that feels they should take an interest in the well being of not only the hard working and loyal employees of their county but, also their families?

I don't feel I am being unreasonable wanting answers to these questions. I am sure there are many county employees that would also like to know why. Maybe those of you running in the up coming elections may want to consider being able to address these questions.
