Letter to the Editor

Bond just too expensive

Wednesday, September 19, 2007

Dear editor:

I take exception to the letter written by Brendan Ash concerning our recent school bond. I, too, want the best education for my grandchildren and great-grandchildren currently enrolled in the Mountain Home school system.

However, money is a problem. Everyone wants more money. The hospital, the jail, the library, the school, etc., etc.

I wonder if this young college student has any appreciation for where this money comes from?

I love the way this "student" uses all the politically correct buzz words, "our children" "our youth."

Let me tell you something Brendan Ash, there is a limit to tax dollars. Have you checked the salary of our elite heads of education? Have you checked our current cost of administration of our school system? Maybe we spend way to much on administration?

I have a granddaughter who teaches in Mountain Home. I had many long talks with myself before I voted "no" on this issue. However, the amount they asked for was unreasonable.

All your little stories were very interesting but none of them make my salary go up, I only have so much money. My property taxes are already to high. I cannot afford this school bond. I'm sorry, but that's the truth. I am 65 years old and many of my friends live on fixed incomes.

Where do they find the funds required to pay these additional taxes? Believe it or not, our children's education does have a price tag and this time the school board exceeded it. I suspect they will probably exceed it again before this issue is resolved.

So please don't say "shame on you for not voting yes." I say shame on you Brendan Ash for your out-of-hand condemnation and not thinking through the problem. There is an answer, we just have to find it.
