Cheney should read textbook

Wednesday, July 4, 2007

Vice President Dick Cheney is refusing to turn over to the national archives, as required by law, certain "internal" classified material.

At first, Cheney said he didn't know that it was required, then said he'd forgotten, and finally just refused to do so, claiming that the law did not apply to the vice-president's office. He argued that under the definition of the law, the vice president's office was not considered part of the executive branch.

This administration has often played fast and loose with the Constitution, but the last time we looked the vice president was part of the executive branch. We've come to believe that the only reason these people stand on the Constitution is to trample it.

Based on the vice president's argument, a lot of high school government textbooks will have to be rewritten -- or perhaps Cheney should just read one.
