Annual Basque picnic is Saturday

"Come one and all and 'Basque' in the sun!" say organizers of the annual Basque picnic.

The Euskal Lagunak Basque Club invites the public to attend the annual Basque picnic this Saturday, Aug. 6, at the Basque Fronton Park in Mountain Home.

The park will open at noon and ticket sales will begin. Drinks and chorizos will be available starting at 1 p.m.

The event also will feature a number of fine arts booths that will include cultural imported items from Spain, watercolors, jewelry, photography, prints and originals, sponsored by the Mountain Home Arts Council.

At 2 p.m. children's games will begin, consisting of gunny sack races, foot races and tug-of-war competitions.

From 3-5 p.m. the lamb dinner will be served, the menu including Spanish rice, salad, sheepherder beans, dessert and wine. The cost is $12 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under.

Adult games, including the open weight carrying competitions will begin at 5:30 p.m.

The Etxeko Gazteak Children's Dance Group of Mountain Home will perform traditional dances in costume beginning at 7:15 p.m., and from 8 p.m. to midnight a street dance will feature the band, Third Take.

The public is invited to the annual celebration of Basque culture.
