Robert "Bob" Melvin George, 74, of Mountain Home, died June 16, 2005.

Memorial services were held Tuesday, June 21, at Summers Funeral Homes, McMurtrey Chapel in Mountain Home. Inurnment followed at Mountain View Cemetery.

Bob was born in Reading, Pa., on Aug. 5, 1930, to Claude C. and Catherine E. Adams. He graduated from Reading High School in 1949. In high school he was voted "outstanding athlete" of the graduating class. He also received a trophy for Most Valuable Player accomplishments. His athletic achievements earned him a scholarship at a local college.

He then enlisted in the Air Force in 1950, specializing in the field of security. From the 9th Combat Defense Squadron in Mountain Home, he went to Lakenheath, England, where he served with the 3909 AP Squadron. In addition to England, he also served in Thailand, but he eventually returned to his favorite location, Mountain Home.

After retiring from the military in 1973 he joined the Mountain Home Police Department. In 1984, he was promoted to Police Chief. After 21 years with the police department, he retired in 1994.

Bob was a member of the Lions, Elks, American Legion and the Idaho Police Association.

Bob enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, camping and working in the yard. He also enjoyed his yearly reunion trips with his 3909 AP Squadron.

"Words cannot express the terrible loss that is felt by Bob's friends and family. He had a great zest for life and adventure and an unforgettable sense of humor," his family said. "He was hard working and ambitious. Those who had the privilege to know Bob love and respected him.

"He will be greatly missed, especially by his best friend, companion, and wife of 18 years, Belva. We are thankful that Bob is resting peacefully and painlessly."

Bob is survived by: his wife, Belva, of Mountain Home; sons Terry of Boise, Dan and his wife, Alicia, both of Reno, Nev., stepchildren Michelle Catlett of Boise and Rob Catlett and his wife, Lisa, both of Wasilla, Alaska; sisters Carol Myers, Donna Steiger and Claudia Krauter, all of Pennsylvania, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
