Deputy shot at on I-84

Wednesday, February 9, 2005

Authorities have few clues in an incident last week when an Elmore County deputy was shot at while investigating a crash on I-84.

Deputy Sean Sterling was completing his investigation of a non-injury DUI rollover in the westbound lane near Exit 90 on I-84 on Tuesday night last week just after 2 a.m. when he heard a shot fired. The bullet, believed to be in the .22-caliber range, struck a guard rail near where he was standing, and then richocheted away.

Sterling did not see where the shot came from, but observed at least three semis and a box van traveling by his location at the time, and believe it came from one of the moving vehicles.

"It hit within a few feet of where he was standing," said patrol supervisor Bob Peace. "It definitely got his attention." Peace said the shot also could have come from from traffic in the eastbound lane.

Law enforcement authorities in Ada County and eastern Elmore County were alerted to watch for any of the possible vehicles, but no vehicles were pulled over.

"Right now, there isn't a lot we can do," said Peace, "but if something like this happens again, we'll look at it in a different light."

Anyone who may have any information concerning the incident is encouraged to call the Elmore County Sheriff's Department.
