Ethel Starkey, 90

Ethel Mae Starkey, 90, of Mountain Home, died Thursday Dec. 16, 2004, in a local care center.

Services were held Tuesday, Dec. 21, at Glenns Ferry Methodist Church. Graveside services followed at Glenn Rest Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Rost Funeral Home, Mountain Home.

Ethel Mae was born June 14, 1914, in Glenns Ferry, to Ernest and Florence (Newcomb) Belmore.

She graduated from Glenns Ferry High School.

She then attended Lewis and Clark Normal School.

She started teaching in Banks, Idaho, in a one-room schoolhouse, teaching grades 1-12.

After leaving Banks, Ethel Mae moved to Boise and started working as a secretary where she met Kenneth Starkey. In 1938 they were married in Boise.

In 1942 Kenneth and Ethel Mae moved to Glenns Ferry and she resumed teaching, at first in the 5th grade, although most of her teaching career there was spent in the 1st grade.

In 1976 she retired from the Glenns Ferry school district.

Ethel Mae attended the U of I, ISU, BSU and graduated from ISU with a degree in Education.

She enjoyed traveling and vacations in New England, Washington D.C., and Europe and Asia. She also enjoyed being with her family members and especially being with her grandchildren, Ken, Mike, Josh and Patrick.

Ethel Mae is survived by: her son, Dr. Richard Starkey and his wife, Deb Hofer, of Mountain Home; her daughter, Kathleen, and her husband, Conrad Horn of Salem, Ore., four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Ethel Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, a brother, Howard Belmore, and a sister, Mable Brewer.
