Ireland to seek re-election

Calvin Ireland has announced his decision to run for re-election to the Board of Elmore County Commissioners.

With one term already under his belt, Ireland hopes to continue guiding the county into the future. "It has been an interesting and at times entertaining experience," said Ireland as he reflected back over the past four years.

"I believe the level of city/county communications has risen to an all time high, and I am especially proud of that achievement," he said. While noting the two governing entities still have their differences, he feels both have shown a willingness to talk things out and to try to find a compromise that is best for all citizens.

Communications is the key to good decisions, said Ireland. "We depend on public input to have more than one opinion as we make our choices," he explained.

He explained that was one reason behind the county's decision not to go with certificates of participation to build a new jail. "I am strongly in favor of a jail bond. But we need to allow the public to be involved. We don't want people to think that we are bypassing them as taxpayers. It is important they have an opportunity to have their say."

To provide some continuity in county government, the commissioners serve for staggered two-year and four-year terms. This year's election is for a two-year term for Ireland's District 1 seat. The District 3 seat, currently occupied by Commissioner Larry Rose, is on the line for a four-year term.

Commissioner Mary Egusquiza-Stanek has two years remaining for her term of office.
