Harriet "Hattie" Porter, 87, of Mountain Home, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, with her devoted daughter, Shelvia Jean Gossett, by her side.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 31, at Summers Funeral Homes, McMurtrey Chapel in Mountain Home. Burial followed at Mountain View Cemetery.

Harriet (Hattie) was born March 29, 1916, in Aiken, S.C., the daughter of William Flander and Fannie (Redd) Craig.

Harriet worked hard throughout her life as a waitress, postmistress and business owner.

As a young woman working in Southern California Harriet had the opportunity to become good friends with many well-known people such as Hank Williams, Slim Whitman, Walt Disney and many more.

She moved to Mountain Home in 1986 from Las Vegas to be closer to her family. Harriet and her daughter Jean, have been together since that time caring for each other and the animals they both loved so much.

"Harriet was a beautiful, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be greatly missed," her family said.

Harriet is survived by: her daughter, Shelvia Jean Gossett of Mountain Home; one sister, Billie Mallie of Trenton, N.J.; two grandchildren and four great- grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bob Porter, eight brothers and six sisters.
