Tiger matmen continue to rack up wins

The Mountain Home Tigers wrestling squad picked up dual match wins over Meridian and Bishop Kelly last week.

The Mountain Home Tigers picked up 11 wins last Tuesday night in their home non-conference dual over the Meridian Warriors, winning six by pins, and four by forfeit.

Robert Weed had the fastest pin of the night for the Tigers, pinning his Meridian opponent in the 275-pound weight class in just 29 seconds.

James Greenfield was just seven seconds slower, in pinning his 135-pound opponent.

A.J. Hutchison (125 pounds), Garrett Wells (140), Chris Hathaway (145) and Brennen Lawson (152) also won by pins. Kyle Hickerson (112), David Wise (119), Kole Spaulding (171) and Charles Davidson (215) all won by forfeit. Mike Ramsey picked up a 9-5 decision at 130 pounds.

Losing by pins for the Tigers were Brandon Stempfley at 103 pounds, Tyson Sessions at 160, and Anthony Johnson at 189 pounds.

Tiger wrestling coach Lynn Knudson was pleased with the efforts from his squad in the non-conference win.

"It's really great when they come out and perform like this. I know what they have the capabilities of doing, and they surely came out tonight and did the job we needed them to do, and improved their wrestling over this last weekend. It was just good to see!"

Bishop Kelly 12

The Tigers went to Bishop Kelly last Thursday night and picked up six pins, three forfeits and three decisions out of the 14 matches.

The fastest pin of the night went to Chris Hathaway at 140 pounds, where he took just 18 seconds to pin his Bishop Kelly opponent. Kyle Hickerson took just 29 seconds to pin his 112 pound opponent. Also winning by pins were Mike Ramsey at 130 pounds, James Greenfield at 135, Tyson Sessions at 160 and Kole Spaulding at 171.

Picking up wins by forfeit were David Wise at 119 pounds, A.J. Hutchison at 125, and Brennen Lawson at 145.

Brandon Stempfley won a 14-4 major decision at 103 pounds, and Kori Andrews won a 15-7 major decision at 152 pounds, and Charles Davidson won a 6-5 decision at 215 pounds.

The Tigers forfeited at 189 pounds, and Robert Weed lost by pin at heavyweight.

"The kids came out there and wrestled very well and we came up with another conference win," said Coach Knudson. "It was a good effort."

TIGERS FINISH 4TH AT BURLEY JUNIOR VARSITY TOURNEY

The Mountain Home Tiger junior varsity squad wrestled at a JV tournament at Burley last Saturdayand finished fourth out of 20 teams. Blackfoot's JV won the meet with 133 points, Skyline was second with 125.5, Jerome was third with 120, and Mountain Home fourth with 109.5 points.

Marcos Ortiz won the 119-pound championship, Daniel Mason finished second at 125 pounds, Daniel Doronio was third at 112 pounds, Corey Baum took third at 275, and Brandon Stempfley was fourth at 103 pounds.

"We really spent a lot of time this week going over a lot of things we've already been over trying to get these kids to perform a little bit better," said Coach Knudson of the JV wrestlers.

"Looking back on some of the earlier tournaments they went to, this one, there was a lot of improvement. Hopefully, we can continue on until we get ready for district and some good things there for us, so I'm happy with a fourth-place finish out of 20 at Burley."

The Tigers have a big conference dual at Kuna tomorrow night.

"I feel it's probably the match that's going to decide the conference championship, but I'm not looking ahead, I just know we have to go out and be ready to wrestle Kuna, because they're tough."

The Tigers go to the Weiser Invitational Friday and Saturday. The Tiger JV squad goes to Mountain View Saturday for a JV tourney.
