First female commissioner sworn in

Wednesday, January 15, 2003

History was made Monday, when, for the first time since the county was created, Elmore County installed a woman as a member of the county's board of commissioners.

Newly elected county officials formally took the oath of office Monday as the Board of Elmore County Commissioners met for the first time in the new year.

After taking care of old business items on the agenda, Chairman Calvin Ireland adjourned the Board sine die for the swearing in ceremonies.

County Prosecutor Aaron Bazzoli issued the oath of office to Larry E. Rose, commissioner for the second district, and to Mary Egusquiza-Stanek for district one, the first woman to ever serve as an Elmore County Commissioner.

With the new board in place, the first order of business was to reopen the meeting and to elect a chairman. By unanimous decision, Calvin Ireland was once again chosen to lead the board and his first duty as chairman was to swear in Rose Plympton as County Treasurer, James P. Haydon as County Assessor, and Marla B. Spence as County Coroner.

A family emergency prevented Clerk of the Court Gail Best from taking part in the ceremonies, but she was sworn in later in the day.

The commissioners found a relatively light agenda for their first day. They received the monthly updates from each of the elected officials, hearing not only a review of the past activities, but learning of expectations for the near future.
