Mary Smith

Mary Smith will be honored as this year's Person of the Year at the 15th Annual Black History Banquet, sponsored by the Mountain Home Community Black History Committee.

Smith, who has been a member of the Abundant Life Christian Fellowship Church since 1994, presently works with the Elmore County Hospice Program as an "on call" chaplain, providing support and comfort for individuals in need of the program and their families.

A member of the Mountain Home Ministerial Alliance of Churches and Clergy, she also is involved with the Idaho State Prison Outreach Ministry, providing spiritual assistance to inmates.

She has an associates degree in Biblical Studies and is an active participant in the Women's Aglow International group's Mountain Home Chapter.

She was born on the Fourth of July in Dover, Del., the daughter of the late Charles and Mildred Woodards.

An Idaho resident for 16 years, she worked for the 366th Communications Squadron as a civilian, after completing a 13-year military career that began in 1982.

She will be honored for her service to the community during Friday's banquet, which will feature Gov. Dirk Kempthorne as the keynote speaker.

The Mountain Home Black History Committee also will present the Martin Luther King, Jr., and Thurgood Marshall awards for area citizens who have contributed to the community and the black history activities over the years, and present the winners of its poster and essay contests from area schools.

Since the event is being held on Valentine's Day, special gifts of chocolates and carnations will be provided to women attending the banquet. "Bring your date for a special evening," committee member Joe McNeal said. "Spend Valentine's Day with Idaho's first couple."

The banquet will be held Feb. 14 at the Elk's Lodge with the social hour beginning at 6:30 p.m. and dinner at 7:15 p.m. The cost is $30 per person or $15 for children 12 and under. For tickets and more information call 587-3227. Tickets also are available at the Chamber of Commerce. The public is invited. Dress is formal wear.

This year's menu will feature barbecued ribs, cole slaw, collard greens, sweet potatoes and peach cobbler.
