Glenns Ferry man charged in shooting

Wednesday, May 1, 2002

A Glenns Ferry man has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he confronted and then shot a youth entering his RV Saturday night.

At approximately 9 p.m. Elmore County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to 110 West Harrison in Gleans Ferry in reference to a shooting.

Detectives learned that Benjamin C. Caler, 51, of Glenns Ferry, had been having problems with people entering his motor home on his property from time to time. Saturday night he allegedly waited in the motor home and confronted Joshua L. Stritesky, 20, of Mountain Home, whom he allegedly caught entering his RV.

Stritesky and Caler then apparently had an argument in the motor home, which carried on outside. Caler pulled a handgun and threatened Stritesky with it. He then allegedly fired a warning shot that struck Stritesky in the right forearm below the elbow.

Stritesky was taken by air ambulance to St. Alphonus Regional Medical Center in Boise and underwent surgery that night. He was reported to be in fair condition following the surgery.

Captain Mike Barclay of the Elmore County Sheriff's Office said it did not appear that Caler intended to shoot the victim, but only to fire a warning shot.
