Letters to the Editor

...while another audience member contends it was all a set-up by SRA (07/02/08)
Dear editor: I attended the informational meeting (Don Gillispie, AEH president) hosted in Glenns Ferry regarding the proposed nuclear power plant for Elmore County. Idahoans value the freedom to voice our opinions, and Gillispie's meeting let supporters and opponents voice theirs in an open forum...

Rickards tells his side of arrest, contending authorities overreacted..... (07/02/08)
Dear editor: Well, after 20 years of "public meetings" on both public and private property, being arrested for trespassing was a first for me! I was sitting quietly in the audience for 20 minutes when the police officer tapped me on the shoulder, and said "You are under arrest for trespassing and battery."...

Arts Council, Civic Club say thanks to all for help during Garden Tour (07/02/08)
Dear editor: On behalf of the Mountain Home Arts Council and Beta Zeta Civic Club, we would like to thank the community for supporting our 12th Annual Garden Tour, "A Palette of Posies." The funds raised will allow us to give a $1,000 scholarship to a high school student pursuing a degree in the art field and also a Log Cabin Literary Scholarship in 2009...

Tax money should not be used on illegal aliens (06/25/08)
Dear editor: I enjoyed your Notebook on the joys of gardening last week. I agree gardening is work not relaxation. I also enjoyed your tribute to our great firefighters' 100th birthday. I went to the parade and took pictures of the antique firetrucks...

Couny officials need to do more to create jobs (06/25/08)
Dear editor: I hear a lot of complaining from people in Mountain Home about the lack of jobs. Let's take a look at what is out there. Glenns Ferry is basically dead. Hammett has nothing. Mountain Home has the cheese factory and then the minimum wage jobs of Walmart and fast food joints. The rest of the county has absolutely nothing to offer...

GOP convention looked too liberal (06/25/08)
Dear editor: Ever walk into the wrong place? I thought a few times that I'd done that while attending the GOP Convention in Sandpoint this past 15th and 14th. Going up there as an Elmore County delegate, I was not prepared for what I saw and heard. Like many old-time Republicans I've become concerned about the erosion our party has been undergoing, so I agreed to attend, to find out first hand what's going on...

Friends group decides to expand its focus (06/18/08)
Dear editor: In response to Sandy Pitts letter; I would like to thank her for her concern but also clarify several things. First of all, nine years ago when the Museum was re-activated, it was under the leadership of Sheryle Landon, Deb Neeley and others, as well as myself. We were assisted by many volunteers and the community responded until it was necessary to get a part-time employee (Doris Walters and then later Nancy Campbell)...

Just say no to nuclear plant (06/18/08)
Dear editor: This letter is in protest to the proposed nuclear plant, you know the one Owyhee County residents said NO to. I truly hope that the Elmore County Planning and Zoning and our county commissioners are not so money hungry that they allow this nuclear plant anywhere close to Elmore County as there are safer, cleaner and much more practical sources of energy at our disposal, such as the 20 newly erected wind towers at Bennett Creek or our endless supply of solar energy...

Idea to make post graduation ceremony better (06/18/08)
Dear editor: Well, the weather held and MHHS graduation was lovely. However, afterwards it was extremely chaotic and difficult to get anywhere and find the seniors you wanted to see. First suggestion: unlock the gates so people don't have to walk so far to get on the field...

Possible solutions to oil crisis (06/11/08)
Dear editor: We need to use every natural resource we have available to us to generate electric power. One way would be to save every bit of used oil we can and mix it with coal, which has been ground to the consistency of face powder, some wood alcohol, and a little water. This mixture would then be put in a pipeline and pumped wherever it was needed to heat water, making steam, which would generate electric power...

City needs to do a better job fixing potholes (06/11/08)
Dear editor: I would like to know who thought they could fix the giant potholes throughout town with 3/4 road mix. This would be a great idea if no one was to ever drive over them again or it was never to rain again. I understand this is supposed to be a temporary fix, but when this is the same fix year after year it makes me wonder why we even pay taxes...

Friends of museum ignored (06/11/08)
Dear editor: Something's afoot at the museum. It is my understanding that this spring the Friends of the Museum petitioned the Board of Directors of the Mountain Home Historical Society to have their volunteers, as a group, be recognized as an auxiliary of the organization. We all know what "auxiliary" members of any institution contribute: THEY DO ALL OF THE HARD WORK...

Firemen really are the best (06/11/08)
Dear editor: I love reading your editorials and notebook each week. You do a great job. I certainly agree with you about our great fire department. I know first hand how great they are. I had a fire in my garage, which is attached to the house. They came right away and got the fire out before it burned the house. I had smoke damage in the house but they saved it...

Vote Greg Berry for sheriff (06/11/08)
To the citizens of Mountain Home: I am writing to let you know that Greg Berry, who is running for sherriff, is NOT related to Tom Berry the former Chief of Police for Mountain Home. So do not let that influence who you vote for. Greg is a former detective for Elmore County...

He still won't back McCain (06/04/08)
Dear editor: I know a lot of people around town, or rather, a lot of people seem to know me. Since the primary, I've already been asked if I'm going to re-direct these writing talents I'm supposed to have to help promote a John McCain presidency "for the good of the party."...

Take terrorist threats seriously (05/28/08)
Dear editor: The city of Boise is in fifth position for the vulnerability of being hit by terrorists. They actually should be in a higher position in my opinion. This would probably affect the surrounding areas of Ada, Elmore and Owyhee Counties. All of the dams could be blown up causing not only tremendous flooding but also the loss of all electrical power. ...

Corder in touch with constituents (05/21/08)
Dear editor: We hear so many negatives aspects of politicians, lawmakers who are simply out for power and looking to ascend to a higher office. Some politicians use an office to build their own agenda or perhaps support party affiliations but nothing more...

Corder friend to District 22 (05/21/08)
Dear editor: Tim Corder gets my vote for state senate in District 22. He is a devoted family man with strong moral values who has proven himself in business and in politics. Tim has the right blend of sensible conservatism that works for Boise and Elmore Counties...

Arlie Shaw has done a great job (05/21/08)
Dear editor: I want to encourage everyone to vote for Arlie Shaw as our Elmore County Commissioner. As a friend, neighbor and commissioner, I know Arlie to be a man of integrity and honesty. He is committed to doing what is best for the people in Elmore County...
