Let's go, Mountain Home!
After everything that happened last week involving the student-led protests at Mountain Home High School, I'm hopeful the mood will change to a spirit of celebration this week as the community prepares for this year's homecoming.
While I understand and appreciate that students and parents in this community have strong feelings either way regarding last week's protests, I believe it's time to put aside our differences and work toward mending some bridges. Instead of worrying about who was right and who was wrong, let's agree to disagree and leave it at that.
Instead of being angry at one another, let's harness that energy and focus it on motiving our varsity football team toward victory this Friday. It's been a long time since our Tigers have won a homecoming game -- eight years to be exact -- and I'm hopeful this will be the year when that drought ends.
I've seen our players in action, and I know they have what it takes to put some wins on the board this season. From my perspective, they need to beef up their defense just a little with a lot more work needed to make their offense stronger to move the ball down the field into the endzone.
As I've seen in past seasons, it's the turnovers that tend to cost our Tigers dearly and deprive them of needed wins. Keeping those to a minimum could be part of the recipe that will turn losses into wins.
If you get a chance, take time to cheer on our high school students during the homecoming parade, which is set to start at 2 p.m. Friday. Students representing the different sports programs, academic organizations and clubs will show up in force to make the trek down East Jackson Street before making the turn onto American Legion Boulevard.
Over the last few years, the homecoming parade has gotten considerably bigger and better, and it's something worth taking in.
I also encourage everyone to come together in a show of solidarity by filling every seat in the grandstands during Friday evening's homecoming game. We can prove to Skyview that we might have our differences, but we grow stronger because of them.
Mountain Home is unique compared to other communities in Idaho because of those differences. After all, our community is able to view issues affecting our state, our country and even our world from a much broader perspective because each of us represents a multitude of different cultures and beliefs.
We are stronger as a result.
So let's use that strength in a positive way by showing the Tigers that we genuinely care. We have some incredible students at the high school this year, and they have worked hard to prepare for their homecoming.
Showing up for the game and rooting our team on to victory over Skyview is a great way to show your support for the students.
