  • I think you're pretty much on track with this one Kelly. I've attended may county and state fairs in various places and almost all of them included events for the whole family.

    Some ideas:

    1) Include more contests such as handmade quilts, farm produce, wood craft items, baked goods, etc.

    2) What about a car show or a tractor pull.

    3) As you mentioned, a better carnival would give things a boost.

    4) Consider moving the date later in the year to coincide with harvest time and cooler temperatures (maybe late August or early September). I know that this might cause some problems with the youth bieng back in school but with proper coordination I think it could work, it has worked in other areas.

    5) Concerts. Start with local bands or musician, some would probably play for a reasonable fee, some may even do it for free to gain some exposure.

I think the fair has a lot of room to improve and grow and the saying: "If you build it they will come" has some validity here. You don't have to go gang bust all at once but it has to start somewhere if this fair going to continue.

It would be tough to move the dates because of the animals for 4H and Optimist (which right now is the biggest part of the fair)...

They do have a decent amount of Quilts, wood craft, Baked goods etc in the expo building although the numbers for that were down this year..

Also the bands that they have were local bands..

The carnival was almost nonexistent this year and last year was even worse and to me that would be your biggest magnet to draw people...The second draw would be vendors on the midway but the fair board will never bring them in for the price they charge for the spaces, its just to high for the small fair vendors....

I do like the idea of a Car show, Tractor pull or another attraction...

The Fri and sat night ICA rodeo has had nothing but sound system problems for the last two or three years its probably time to change that also!!

  • I AGREE WITH KELLEY,IT IS HOT WHEN THEY HAVE IT AND THE LACK OF A CARNIVAL PLAYS A PART.I HAVE A BAND AND WE HAVE NEVER BEEN ASKED TO PLAY THE FAIR A LITTLE VARIETY WOULD HELP ALSO.

I try to support these events but you have to at least put up a good faith effort not the same ol thing.Lets hope that next year is better.
