  • I agree with you Kelly. Taking this decision to the Supreme Court, even if the Supreme Court decides to hear the case is a waste of taxpayer money.

    I wish Otter cared as much about education as he seems to care about legislating social mores.

  • I agree with Kelly, as well. It is a waste of time, energy, and money to fight this. However, this is where party loyalty comes into play. Otter is probably doing this to appease the Republican Party faithful. Letting them know that he will not go down without a fight. A fight that is going to end in defeat.

  • Congratulations lamont! That is very good news, and I understand about not letting your guard down.

    Times change and things that weren't allowed before have changed as people grew and became more educated with some people growing faster than others. Unfortunately, there will always be those that cling to the past and fear progress.

    I saw another poster, who I think may be liberal, who commented on his dying friend a moderate Republican. The friend was a Republican and had opinions that were different from the commenter but his values were the same. For example the commenter had said that his friend said that he didn't have an opinion on gay rights but supported his brother who is gay.

  • Striking down the ban is more of legal technicality than anything. The ban was ruled Unconstitutional because it violates the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. Otter can fight all he wants but change is in the air.

    Some of you are willing to "GO THERE" at the drop of a hat. It is his initiative and if it was a success he would be proud to have his name associated with it. Because it is a failure you want it called ACA. The Democrats had no problem calling the Masscare act, Romneycare during the election cycle.

    I think we need to start holding these idiotic judges financially accountable for their rulings.

    Gay is not a race or sex, its a perverted lifestyle choice in my opinion and I should not be forced to legitimize it.

  • gmoney the constitution does not legislate morals, however it does provide for equal treatment under the law, which states can't take away. I won't post the whole thing but for your convenience I am posting the pertinent section.

    Luckily, absolutely no person is expecting you to legitimize it. That would apply for government officials, like the Legislature, who passed a law banning gay marriages.

    Amendment XIV

    Section 1.

    All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

  • I suppose. gmoney, that equal treatment has some limitations and the Supreme Court has thus far not expanded this to:

    1. occupations

    2. hobbies (which could present some issue for you as a troll).

    However the Supreme Court seems to have currently included the prohibition against banning equal rights for gay people to marry.

    This seems to be a waste of Idaho tax payer money to fight something that:

    1. Idaho will lose

    2. Idaho will spend a lot of taxpayer money on

    3. Idaho will once again, make itself look ridiculous.

  • I don't remember whether it was General Patton or Captain Kirk who stated "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of a few" but some are changing that mantra to the choices of the few outweigh the morals of the many.

    The gay lifestyle is and has been thrown in our faces for the last 20 years, thru media, thru the schools (diversity acceptance) on our children, and now by a single judge to totally disregard the decision of the people of this state.

    This is not a race issue, not a gender issue, not a religious issue. Should we allow LBGT,pedophilia ,cannibalism or other behaviors because a few want to practice it? I say NO.

    I say fight on Idaho and hold these judges accountable

    Sam, I served this country to protect our freedoms and know what Memorial day means other than a 3 day weekend. Do you?

I too wore a uniform for freedom such as it is.We will loose this battle in the courts conservative state or not,and I hate to see money going down the tubes that could be used for far better battles, especially when our kids are being short changed.The money could be better spent.OR better still cut the pay raises for a legislature that selectively listens........guns on campus comes to mind.They only listened to who they wanted to.My gran kids will be going out of state and that's Idaho's loss.Not one dime to support a campus that allows weapons.

    I am not as forgiving as you are, of course there were gays in the service. And in my opinion their service was dishonorable. We all gave an oath that we would serve IAW the UCMJ. Their lifestyle violated that code.

    There is a book out there that helped determine our moralities and I did not write it.

    I think I've been respectful of everyone's opinion and have not called anyone names. Sam, however you have issues. This current blog is about freedoms that servicemen died for and Memorial day acknowledges that sacrifice. I believe that some are taking these freedoms to the extreme, to the detriment of our nation and the human race.

    I have said nothing about taxes.

  • Lamont, you are right of course. It gets my adrenalin going to hear someone suggest that only right wing Christians could have served in the military honorably.

    gmoney, if you will re-read the blog it is about freedoms, that many fought for, even gay men and women. Specifically for this blog it is the freedoms that are guaranteed in the 14th Amendment. The courts are making their decisions based on the 14th Amendment not a moral judgement.

    gmoney, you are clearly not respectful of anybody's opinions that disagree with yours. The blog is about wasting money on a battle that will be lost. Many think that the battle is not an honorable battle because it is about bigotry.

    I personally think that the battle is another embarrassment to Idaho.

  • Lamont, it looks like our messages passed at about the same time. I'll assume that gmoney has better intentions than what it seemed from his posts about me since you seem to respect him.

    Just a personal note. I have a brother that is gay and served in the Navy. For a long time he tried not to be gay. He was married and had children. He was in a combat situation at one point in his service, and luckily he was okay but he was willing to give his life for his country. He received an honorable discharge and went to college afterwards. He outed himself a while back, thinking that our family would reject him. We support him as does his former wife and his children.

    The subject of homosexuality is personal with me as I think about what he went through to try not to be gay and hide the fact that he was.

  • I hear you loud and clear SAM ,The stats say we all have a least someone in the family unit who is homosexual.You know it is common in nature and some beings are both sexes.I feel if you are secure in your own sexuality what is the problem ,but that's me.

    I taught social pyshic in the military for a long time,was a 1 sgt for awhile and I came off the flt line I was orignaly a crew chief.I don't let to much of this get to me.The world is what it is and life is very short.I don't think some have any idea about persecution and bigotry.I ALWAYS SAY IF IT AINT HAPPENING TO YOU YOU HAVE NO IDEA.

The U.S courts at all levels have been corrupted by liberal dollars and The liberal agenda is to try to turn it from a morality issue to a human rights issue.   • First, it is my understanding that it is the Governor's responsibility to not waste taxpayer's money. I know that they do it every second of every day but we can at least hope.

    Second, one of the lessons that all grown ups with at least a 40 point IQ learn is that you need to learn to pick your battles. Not every crusade can be done. Governor Otter should know that this is one of those times. I am expecting a bit of common sense from a politician aka glorified used car salesman. I really need to adjust my expectations.

    Finally, party loyalty should come second to doing what is most practical and pragmatic. It is a colossal waste of money to fight this. That money does not need to be spent, period.

    There are so many bigger and better issues than this. The economy, crime, cutting down on regulation, etc. are of far greater importance than this. By continually fighting this, conservatives simply push it into the spotlight. It is my understanding that they want this to go away. Grown men should know that the more you fight against someone, the more they fight back. The more you scratch the mosquito bite, the worse it gets.

    Some people may agree or disagree on whether homosexuality is a moral issue. I don't think that it is. However, the federal courts are deciding not on the basis of a moral issue but constitutional rights and any law suit by Idaho is a waste of taxpayer time and makes us once again, thanks to our governor, look like a bunch of yokels.

    If he has money burning a hole in his pocket, he should consider education for our kids.

I was exposed to a gay couple that lived 9 feet away from us. I did not become gay and have never even considered it.   • This is a side topic but for those who think that Obama is wrong about Benghazi, he is. However, cover -ups and lying have been done by every President. The problem is that Americans tolerate it. Liberals will overlook it if the President is on their side and conservatives will whine and vice versa. Party loyalty should not override simple truth. Politicians are universally dirty liars so all of us should hold them equally accountable. No playing favorites.

    Back to the topic,

    We would be all better off with we took personal responsibility and stopped expecting politicians to steer our ship. For example, taxes. Instead of letting politicians play with tax law and essentially pick winners and losers, institute a flat tax or a vastly simplified tax law. Furthermore, institute a balanced budget amendment and leave it at that. That would take the intrigue out of elections.

    I will try to not get too theoretical but some of it comes to Americans always wanting the sure thing. They think that we can take risk out of our lives. Government is supposedly a way to do that. I take pride in knowing that I got what I have through hard work and determination. Was it a sure thing? Not even close. Plenty of times my train went off the track. I never used the government safety net. Could I have? Yes.

    Most Americans will forgive the multitude of sins committed by the politicians as long as they say the right things and make it feel like they are taking the risk out of life. The stimulus plan is an example of that.

    Gay marriage is the lightning rod that it is because it is one of the last vestiges of organized religion's control on society. As time has went on, religion and the church have became less influential. Religion should be something that is personal and left at home, IMO. Separation of Church and State helped America become as great as it is.

  • Yes, they do. Everything is the same for them except that Idaho may not give them the same rights/obligations as a married couple for such things as:

    1. state taxes

    2. hospital definition of who is "family" for visiting some patients.

    My brother got married in another state, although he lives in Idaho with his spouse.

    Take a moment to be part of the world. You will realize that religious types are the majority and have always been. The influence of the Church is felt everywhere. Some good and some bad. Such is life.

    If you have ever been self aware, you would realize that the more that you tell someone that they can't do something, the more they fight back. You can't expect someone to just lay down. You would not.

    When gay marriage becomes part of the social fabric, places like Mountain Home, ID or Winnemucca, NV will go on just as they always have. Only in the most urban environments will anything change. That is not a value judgment rather just an objective observation much like stating that the wind is blowing NW at 15 mph.

    How can Otter be praised for following the will of the people in Idaho, while he is spending millions of dollars to support a losing battle to discriminate against some of Idaho's citizens. We don't want tax money going for that.

    The legislature like pay raises yet he fights against increasing the minimum wage. I'll bet a lot of people didn't like that.

    As a governor of this state he should set an example and call the laws of the United States by their correct name and not call it something to denigrate the president.

    I don't think anybody is going to be able to discriminate against Gays for much longer.

We are putting on a MUSIC festival here mtn home on the 23 of august there will be seven different groups with seven different types of music.The BOISE BIG BAND,PINTO BENNETT,AND PAUL TILLOTSON.....THAT'S JUST THREE SO YOU CAN SEEIT SHOULD BE FUN .THERE WILL BE CRAFT BOOTHS AND VENDORS put it on your calendar cost will be $10.00 with ticket $15.00 at gate.

    ALL PFOFITS we are donating to the kids scholorships etc.We are hoping for a good crowd because this town doesn't support to many things.I HAVE BEEN HERE 40 YRS AND IT SEEMS TO GET WORST EVERY YEAR,BUT I DONT GIVE UP.

Because most Republicans are law abiding folk even when they disagree. Unlike Democrats who parade, protest and openly disobey all laws that don't fit their immoral agenda.

    And please don't bring up Bundy again, the gov coddled him for far to long.

    Did Gallup poll Americans in Pittsburg or Green Bay, not, they polled San Francisco, SanDiego and LA.

    I must be more cynical than you. I have equal distaste for all politicians.

    I would support a candidate that just says it how it is. One that is realistic and does not promise anything. If one was to get up there and say, "I want to do this but it probably will not happen. I am going to try but can't guarantee anything", I would have a great deal of respect for them. That would be honest, realistic, and not assuming that we all too stupid to realize that he/she does not have control over everybody.

    I have voted Libertarian or third party in almost every election for the last 10 years due to this.

  • I've been reading the conversations about Gay marriage which SEEMS to be the topic of the blog but I'm seeing a lot of things that are unrelated to this such as someone bragging that they make six figures a year.

    I think that there is something in the Bible about those without sin being the first to cast a stone. I think that means that we should be less judgmental of other people which related to the context of the comments that I've seen. It is also related to the topic of the blog because it seems that we should not be judgmental of the Gay and Lesbian community and stop the discrimination which face it, is exactly what the Ban on Gay Marriage is.

    Starting with the IRS comment. A group is attempting to say that it deserves tax exempt status and has the name Patriots and Liberty in it. Of course that is probably a political group not deserving to be exempt from taxes. The IRS was trying for an efficient way of separating the really tax exempt groups from those many groups trying to get away with something. How about some selective umbrage directed to the groups who were clearly political groups trying to not pay taxes?

    Life will not change for 99% of Idahoans when gay marriage comes into being. Life in Mountain Home, Salmon, Inkom, Rogerson, etc. will go on just like it always has. It would seem to be that those who are practicing the arts of exaggeration and saying that it is a slippery slope would be best served to focus on what is in front of them and not focus on contrived paranoia.

    On a side note, Conservative PAC groups were targeted but they would do themselves a favor if they did not advertise to the world that they are going to stick it to the man. Don't read into this too much. I am just saying that if you tell someone that you are going to thumb your nose at them, that you are going to put yourself on the collective radar.

  • Maybe the Conservative PAC groups should not be trying to get a tax free status if they are clearly a political group?

    The "left" hasn't discriminated them. Some IRS employees to work more efficiently used searches by name to identify easily political groups that were wasting their time by applying for a tax deferred status when they didn't deserve it.

    Gay and lesbians deserve the equal protection of the law. It absolutely doesn't matter what you, CoolBreeze, think that they think.

    It is one thing to make yourself known but it is another to advertise that you are going to defy the law and thumb your nose. The law may be unjust but to complain that you were targeted is a bit childish. You deliberately drew the attention in a negative way and so when you get it, stop complaining. You can't start the fire and then complain when the fire spreads and burns your field.

    Back to the topic,

    I would like it best if the topic of gay marriage just went away. Give them what they want and let it be. If it is a mistake, society will soon find out.

  • On the topic, there is an interesting poll that recently came out about "same-sex" marriage.

    It showed that overwhelmingly (81%) of people younger than 30 supported it. It had some other interesting statistics too so I'm providing the link for those interested. The 81%, I think, is a pretty good indicator that 10 or 20 years from now this will be a non issue.

  • I hate to go off the topic but scientists now believe that left handedness is a dominant gene. What causes it to appear recessive is that there is something in the genetic make-up of an individual that either "turns on" or "doesn't turn on" the gene.

    That's why left handedness appears to be recessive but tends to run in families at a higher rate than if it had been a recessive gene.

    Homosexuality also appears to be genetic. It may not show up every time in both of a set of identical twins but I myself have seen two cases of fraternal brothers both being gay.

    I think our children have in general been raised to have open minds to new ideas and lifestyles.

    I apologize to all for going off topic but genetics is kind of a hobby with me.

    Imagine that you are on the road. 20 other cars are speeding. You are one of them. Your vehicle has a sticker on it that, in polite terms, says that cops can go fly a kite. While you drive past the police, you flip them the bird. You are promptly pulled over. Are you the only one speeding? No.

    Were you targeted? Yes.

    Was it unfair? Yes.

    Moral to the story. When you provoke, you have no one to blame but yourself.

    Conservative PAC were targeted unfairly but playing victim is very unbecoming, IMO. They should own up to the fact that they could easily carry on their mission and not provoke the "beast".

    Liberal, IMO, is a synonym for petulant baby. I used to work in a heavy-duty liberal office and I always wanted to come to work with a pack of Depends and tell them to get changed and stop pouting.

    Jokes aside, I am a huge believer in cause and effect. I can look at an issue through that lens and not let loyalty cloud my vision.

    Both sides fling the mud and act like babies. If it was me, I would have the attitude, "It was unfair, we exposed it, and now let's move on." Instead, they keep rehashing it.

    Back to the topic,

    I am hoping that with gay marriage becoming legal that they (liberals) will take a break from the contrived outrage. I am hoping that they will not latch on to a new civil rights cause to proselytize us with. Life is not that bad. I know some will say that I am not gay. They are correct. However, I have not had the easiest road either. Being a childhood abuse victim, being very poor, and a whopping 4'6" in the seventh grade did not exactly make life easy. I overcame and do not complain/whine incessantly.
