If it weren't for the honor...
There's another "pay for performance" bill in the legislature, designed to "honor" teachers.
The bill calls for each of the 105 legislators to hand out an award to a teacher in their district. The teachers would be identified by the school district or charter school they work for.
The chosen teachers would receive a certificate and $500, which is roughly what most observers estimate every teacher in the state contributes out of their own pocket each year to pay for supplies and other classroom amenities for their kids.
But this is so blatantly self serving for the legislators. No matter what their record on education, they'll get their picture in the paper handing out a certificate to an honored teacher. They'll look like supporters of education when they may or may not be. In effect, the legislature wants to spend $52,500 of your tax dollars to make themselves look good.
Giving every teacher in the state a $500 raise, after years of pay cuts, hasn't apparently crossed their minds.
If they really want to improve education -- give school districts the money to hire more teachers. Get student-to-teacher ratios down to decent levels and watch student educational performance soar.
Or, they could get their picture taken.
