It's been a forgettable year
This has been the kind of year where you could say the country was rode hard and put up wet.
It wasn't one of the most shining moments in American history.
Our foreign policy was a shambles. We kept drawing lines that Syria kept stepping over until the Russians, of all people, stepped in and brokered a deal that kept the West out and the civil war continuing. And we called that a victory.
We cut a deal with Iran in which we ended all the pressure our successful embargo policies had put on the country in exchange for a vague promise they wouldn't build any nuclear weapons. It looked a lot like the deal we made with N. Korea several years ago and look how well that turned out.
And we "ended" our involvement in Afghanistan, but we'll still keep a division of troops there to get shot at and killed for a very long time.
Domestically, Congress was in total meltdown mode. Neither party could agree the sky was blue.
Between the unnecessary disaster that was sequester and its furloughs, to shutting down the government, costing the economy at least $24 billion, the clowns in that circus had no idea how to get this country moving, until the two main parties finally quit kowtowing to their radical elements, got their moderate majorities together, and finally, just last week, actually passed the first true budget in six years. Six years! It took Congress three elections to do its job once.
And then, of course, there was Obamacare. There simply aren't words we can use (in a family newspaper) to adequately describe a law that is going to require massive fixes over the next few years.
The only bright spot in the entire economy was the slow, but significant improvements on Main Street's small businesses, which got things slowly moving forward again, while Wall Street and its big business cronies sat on all their cash and wailed about how tough life was for them.
Yeah, it was not a year to remember fondly.
Let's turn this around and make 2014 unforgettable.
