Pete, Bert and Rich did well
The legislative leadership, demonstrating how much they are owned by business and industry, tried to push through a personal property tax bill this year that would have been a disaster for cities, counties, fire districts and other local governments.
That leadership apparently had no clue how tight things are out here for local governments -- what a thin margin they operate on these days to provide basic services demanded by their citizens. You know, little things like paved roads and police protection.
But, many of the legislators themselves actually bothered to listen, and the leadership suffered a stunning defeat when it came up humiliatingly short of the votes it needed, and was forced to watch a much-watered down version offered by the cities and counties pass overwhelmingly.
So, assuming the Senate passes the House bill, there will be some property tax relieve this year, but not so much local governments will be forced to just throw in the towel.
We'd like to thank our legislative delegation from District 23, Sen. Bert Brackett and Representatives Pete Nielsen and Rich Wills, for their votes and positions on the matter.
By standing up to their own leadership they prevented a disaster, and should be praised for their courage and foresight. Good job gentlemen.
