Don't forget to vote Tuesday

Posted Wednesday, October 31, 2012, at 9:01 AM

The election is six days away and we can't encourage people enough to get out an vote.

It's not simply a right, it's also a duty.

Every American should make themselves aware of candidates and their positions on issues, then exercise their responsibility to cast a ballot for the person they think will do the best job.

We're the greatest democracy the world has ever seen, yet voter turnout is often abysmally low. Some states have tried to make it harder to vote, but in Idaho it's actually gotten easier, with absentee voting available at the courthouse until close of business this Friday. It takes less than five minutes to vote.

Last week, we convened our editorial board to list the people we think would do the best job.

This week, those who objected get the last word on these pages. That's only fair.

But the ultimate last word is your secret ballot at the polls next Tuesday.

Exercise that fundamental right, and do so wisely.

Now that "Sandy" has hit, I wonder how this will effect the election? If I had no power or worse yet no home to go to, I don't think voting would be on the top of my list of things to do..

In 2011, the average mathematics score for eighth-grade students in Idaho was 287. This was higher than that of the nation's public schools (283).

In 2011, the percentage of students in Idaho who performed at or above Basic was 77 percent. This was greater than that for the nation's public schools (72 percent).

The percentage of students in Idaho who performed at or above Basic in 2011 (77 percent) was greater than that in 1990 (63 percent) and was not significantly different from that in 2009 (78 percent).

George Carlin on education. Not saying he's right or wrong. Good remarks near the end of the clip.

Those statistics came from sde.idaho.gov That's Tom Luna's department. If it came from a visionary like Tom, it's gotta be valid.

Union thuggery?

My grandma was a teacher, and I didn't see her display any thuggish behavior.

Well, maybe one time when I hit her in the head with a stick of kindling that I had thrown through her kitchen window.

You're using a broad brush.

Bazookaman,

I totally agree, we need to fire them all and start over. Unfortunately we have too many people who will vote party line no matter what.
