This was a bad joke and no one's laughing

Posted Wednesday, August 3, 2011, at 9:18 AM

The drama over the debt ceiling that has gone on over the last few weeks in Congress can best be described as a John Paul Sartre play -- theater of the absurd.

Or perhaps it has been more like a farce.

In the end, by the skin of its teeth, Congress managed to avoid economic catastrophe -- even though some Tea Party members (including at least one presidential candidate), seemed to think that economic Armageddon was a good idea.

The politics of polarization that have dominated the last ten years in Congress have demonstrated how difficult it is for anyone to achieve compromise these days, even though that's the foundation of how our system of government is supposed to work.

The federal budget is enormously complex, and some of the simplistic solutions that have been proposed originated in simple minds. We need a little more of Congress putting on thinking caps, rather than a jester's hat.

As part of the deal approved at the last minute yesterday, Congress guaranteed we'll go through this again -- before the next election. We can't thank them enough for that. But at least it pushed the Casey Anthony case off the front pages.

In fact, all they actually "accomplished" was irreparable harm to the nation's standing as the "gold standard" of the world's economy. Despite all our problems, until this self-created crisis occurred, U.S. federal government securities were still considered the safest investment on the planet.

The compromise included passing a "law" that will "force" Congress to do what it should have been doing all along. No points here for lawmakers passing laws to force them to do what is right.

It also called for a bipartisan commission to look into further means of controlling the spiraling national debt. But such a commission had already been created by the president early in his administration. The final report, the plan of the "Gang of Six," which included Idaho Sen. Mike Crapo, outlined a comprehensive plan to draw down the nation's debt. As long is it is adopted in full measure, not picked apart and adopted a la carte, it would work, even if it meant some tough decisions.

But Congress ignored it after it was completed and rejected it after it was proposed as one of the compromise plans in the current crisis. It included items that were anathema to ideological zealots in both parties, such as making adjustments in entitlement programs and raising income by closing tax loopholes. So the work now "mandated" by Congress has already been done -- and rejected. This does not bode well for the new "super commission" the debt ceiling compromise requires. Voters should count on all the "penalties" for failing to come up with a plan to kick in -- just before the elections.

In the end, this was a political posturing joke. But no one's laughing.

WOW, you blame the Tea Party and they are new to congress. Shows how left you lean and the one thing we know about the left is they like free speech unless you have a different option then them. I also like how the democrats are calling for bipartisanship; where was this when they crammed the healthcare bill through in the dead of night. Not they only call for bipartisanship now they only control two thirds of the problem (Senate and White House).

I do agree that Congress created this mess by not doing their job both Republican controlled (2000-2006) and the Democratic controlled congress (2006-2010).

I'm sure nobody (except the congress) would agree that their benefits and pay needs to be reduced before one cent is reduced for any Veteran, active or not. I feel that if you should not get rich working for your country. Unfortunately Corruption starts as soon as they step foot off the plane in Washington and take the oath that they quickly forget.

I wonder if I could raise my personal dept ceiling, heck I still have checks even if I don't have money. I would even take a vote with my wife.

Actions by BHO speak louder than words. A good bipartisan health care bill?

MtnHomer,

Sorry, it took some digging.

Roy

Thank You for the reference.

This is the second time that I can remember that, The line about Obama saying "they'll have to sit in back of the bus" was mentioned and it had been proven untrue again...

-- Posted by MsMarylin on Wed, Aug 3, 2011, at 3:39 PM

The bad joke is that for decades WE have been sending 537 people to Washington who don't have a clue when it comes to balancing a checkbook!

Is spending out of control? Of course it is.

Is not raising the debt limit the answer? Not if you can sit down and rationally look at the mess we are in. Who out there is willing to take personal responsibility for shutting down 40% of the government? Don't forget, what we are borrowing covers not only the interest on the debt, social security, medicare/medicaid, it also covers appropriations approved by the house of representatives. So where do we cut 1.5 TRILLION immediately? Any answers? Who's program is going to get shut down? If the interest, social security, Medicare/Medicaid, and the military are off limits, then we have ZERO dollars to spend on anything else. I'm sure this won't be a very popular post, but at the end of the day, facts are facts!

Should have more been done? Absolutely! Can more be done before the next election? If you think that can happen you are still suffering from the insanity that has gripped this nation for decades!

Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over, and expecting different results.

It doesn't matter which party controls what, they are all incompetent! Just look at the FAA situation. The airlines are ripping off the consumer because they can. That is made possible by the lack of action by the congress, who have decided to go on VACATION!

Oh, we have done our job and avoided default.

They haven't done their job! If the had been doing their job for all these decades we wouldn't be in the mess we are in now. And who do we have to blame for this you ask? Go look in the mirror and reflect on who you have voted for these last few decades.

MsMarylin,

Your welcome.

-- Posted by royincaldwell on Wed, Aug 3, 2011, at 3:48 PM

THANKS ROY........THE IDEA OF THROW YOURSELFE OFF THE CLIFF ONLY APPLIES IF YOU DONT HAVE TO DO IT.

We could have not done a lot of things but we have. The incompetence of all the people in D>C>through the years has created this thing. So we argue which course is best what should be happening is a sharing of ideas to solve it,but No as long as i dont have to suffer the pain do what you want. That is the prevailing attitude.WE continued taxe breaks for THE JOB CREATERS....so were are the jobs?.....WE will end the Payroll tax holiday...thats you and me.....so we take home less pay, they take home more.we need to spend so they can have demand so they will create but we CONTINUE TAKING from the middle class by raising prices to keep profits up and the fact that we are not creating will be lost in the battle for survival.Sooner than later they will work for whatever we want.PROFITS will continue to climb and as the chaous continues we can just plead that the economy is unstable and it is not time to invest in jobs......THIS CIRCLE JERK IS SO OBVIOUS THAT IT IS PATHETIC.The problem is that it is class warfare and it is getting worse. We ar pitting our citzens against each other. It is simple if business doesnt step up we will go into a full fledged recession that will take us down the tube of 1929.What we are talking about is the continued RAPE of a nation for the greed of a few who want POWER.WE HAVE TO HAVE REVENUE AND CUTS TO GET THIS HOUSE IN ORDER ONE OR THE OTHER WILL NOT SOLVE IT AND THEY KNOW THAT,AND SO DO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.

THE DEPT CIELING AND THE DEFECIETS ARE TWO DIFFERENT CONVERSATIONS WE HURT OUR OWN ECONOMY LINKING THE TWO AT THIS POINT.....CHECK THE MARKETS BOTH HERE AND ABROAD......THIS IS NOT GOOD

MtnHomer,

I did look, and what was listed was small peanuts.

Remember we are talking about 1.5 TRILLION here.

1,500,000,000,000.00

Go through the whole list and add it up. How close to the above figure does it come? Not very I bet.

Now make some real and specific suggestions to take a real bite out of that number. Say in line with 500,000,000,000.00 immediately. Today. And we still end up borrowing 1,000,000,000,000.00

You stated " Words from Obama don't mean much. Thought everyone knew that by now. I DO recall him saying, "they can come along for the ride, they'll just have to sit in the back of the bus". He was referencing congressional GOP members. Doesn't sound too "bipartisan" to me." He NEVER said BACK OF THE BUS. If your going to quote someone be accurate.

I am no Obama fan. I never claimed to be. I am an equal opportunity finger pointer. At this point I have 537 people in Washington I'm willing to point a finger at as well as the sad excuses for voters that sent them there!

MtnHomer and zook

Did you miss the rest of the statement?

" President Obama In Rhode Island: Since They Drove Us Into Ditch, Republicans "Can Come For The Ride, But They Gotta Sit In The Back." In a stump speech in Providence, Rhode Island last week, President Obama said:

Look, I've been using this analogy as I travel the country. Imagine the Republicans driving the economy into a ditch. And it's a deep ditch. It's a big ditch. And somehow they walked away from the accident, and we put on our boots and we rappelled down into the ditch -- me and Jack and Sheldon and Jim and Patrick. We've been pushing, pushing, trying to get that car out of the ditch.

And meanwhile, the Republicans are standing there, sipping on a Slurpee. (Laughter.) Fanning themselves. We're hot and sweaty and pushing, and they're kicking dirt into the ditch. (Laughter.) Getting it into our faces. But that's okay. We said -- every once in a while we'd ask them, "Do you want to come down and help?" They'd say, "No, but you're not pushing the right way, though. Push harder."

Finally, we get this car out of the ditch, and it's banged up. It needs some body work, needs a tune-up. But it's pointing in the right direction. The engine is turning and it's ready to go. And we suddenly get this tap on our shoulders. We look back, who is it? The Republicans. And they're saying, "Excuse me, we want the keys back." You can't have the keys back. You don't know how to drive! (Applause.) You can't have them back. Can't do it. (Applause.) Not after we've worked this hard.

We can't have special interests sitting shotgun. (Laughter.) You know, we got to have middle-class families up in front. (Applause.) We can't -- we don't mind the Republicans joining us. They can come for the ride, but they got to sit in back. (Laughter.)

This is from my previous link.

Well, seeing as how i can't turn down a challenge :) How about the transcript from his radio show, listed on his website?

This is NOT intended to stir anymore debate as to the content of the statements, their veracity or what was really "meant". It's just in response to a request for a link. Those who read it can take it and spin it however they see fit.

I think the horse is dead. People of moderate understanding know that the right will get rid of the bums on both sides if they can. The libs will get rid of the bums on the right if they can. Libs will refuse to say Obama is a bum and coupled with media bias pump him up into our Savoir.

That whole list plus anything else you can come up will not even come close to 500 BILLION. Deficit spending is going to be a fact of life for awhile.

The only way, at this point to avoid deficit spending is both spending cuts and increasing revenue. At that point we are only treading water. To pay off the national debt even over 20 years will require increasing revenue to the point we have 1 TRILLION dollars a year surplus. PERIOD! Do the math. To believe that somehow extra revenue will appear like magic to the extent needed to generate the 1 TRILLION dollars a year need is worse than believing in the tooth fairy.

-- Posted by royincaldwell on Thu, Aug 4, 2011, at 1:42 PM

Simple plan:

Cut the Politian's pay by 50%.

Limit them to two terms, and no retirement...ZERO, ZIP (Lets see who does it for their country and not to get rich.

Politian gets no benefits after their terms for the same reason as above.

Cut out ALL foreign aid.

Bring our troops home, even from Germany...ECT

Cut all Food Stamps, Welfare, and other give always.

Stop making forms in different languages. English only. If you want to apply for something then learn English.

Unemployment: I agree to a point, you get what you put in. Once that is gone so is your unemployment. Three years is a scam, to many people (I know some) don't want a job as they can make more part time under the table and still get 3-4 fishing days a week.

Stop all fraud, if you are caught defrauding the government you spend 20 years in a hard labor camp or you can explain to a mob of 200 tax payers why you ripped them off.

Use e-verify, anyone caught housing, transporting, or helping ILLEGAL LAW BREAKERS...this includes people that invaded our boarders also as they broke the law. Gets 20 years in the same hard labor camp (picking food at the farms the politicians say only illegals will do). Businesses caught hiring any illegal's will loose business to the government. The owners and their families will lose all their houses, cars, bank accounts. This will stop them from hiring illegals.

Every will have to pull their own weight...no free rides.

All the savings will help balance the budget.

Ok I know I'm a bigot, racist, terrorist for thinking everyone should pull their weight and you get what you give. That you can become successfull without being penalized.

CJW,

Your still nowhere near what is needed to even begin to hit a balanced budget. How often have we heard the justification for tax cuts is that it will result in increased revenues? We are talking closing a 1.5 TRILLION dollar deficit. Your whole hypothesis is built around the " If we build it, they will come. " theory. Just ask every city that bought that story when they gave tax breaks etc. to build stadiums. Just ask Ada County, when after they gave Micron a major tax break to bring jobs here, and then Micron laid off 50% of their employees and shipped those jobs overseas or to other states. If you cut spending by 750 BILLION, you still come up 750 BILLION short. Just where is that going to come from???

-- Posted by royincaldwell on Thu, Aug 4, 2011, at 6:27 PM

CJW

I forgot to mention that Social Security, Medicare and the military are off limits.

-- Posted by royincaldwell on Thu, Aug 4, 2011, at 6:33 PM

MtnHomer

As you recall those surplus years were at a higher tax rate all the way around. Remember the justification for the Bush tax cuts? At the present rate the surplus is going there will be a equal to to the tax cuts. Not a word about paying down the debt. Not a word about a rainy day fund.

If there is a balanced budget amendment adopted, we will have no choice but to quit borrowing money.

In regard to companies that have taken their operations overseas, perhaps if some of those companies U.S. employees had been given an opportunity to accept a wage and benefit package that was relatively equivalent to the wage the company now pays their foreign employees, the workers here in the U.S. may have been able to remain with the company. I don't subscribe to the belief that the only reason companies send jobs overseas is due to the corporate tax rate. Cheaper labor is a powerful incentive as well.

On a side note, those companies that are competing globally expect our government to intervene when they perceive that the practices of their foreign competitors are unfair in some way. The investigation, negotiation and litigation can go on for years. In the meanwhile, who pays for that government intervention on behalf of those companies who have sought relief?

I don't know much about the Quakers or the Mennonites, however I do know a little about the Amish. They do things that most people aren't aware of. Muslims have a right to build a Mosque in our Country and they still have to obey our laws

I don't think the Amish have camera's, but I do know they make a lot of money off dogs. Dogs they don't care about, dogs who live in wire cages and get NO vet care and are very much neglected. I have gone to protest Marches in PA and If you want to know more about the Amish and some Mennonites in that state and also Ohio let me know. I can find you plenty to read

Most of this fear mongering comes from Yup you guessed it FOX NEWS!! Read what cbsnews has to say here's the link

The word ATTEMPTED is the KEY......THEY have to obey our laws and if they do not they suffer a consquence........There is no group that has immergrated to this country that has not set up its own code of conduct, rules and laws within its own conclave. This has gone on in a secrative way since the beginning. So we tolerated this type of behavior as long as it didnt go beyound the conclave. It still goes on,and yes the FLDS conclave is and excellent example. When we talk of these type of things and ignore the fact that the police dept in colorado arizonia did not enforce the law of the state ,the country or accepted morality of america how can you single out another group for the same subversion of our laws.I DONT LIKE GOV CHRISTIE.....HE IS RIGHT are we witch hunting based on religion ,ethenicity what????? THE PRECONCIEVED PRESUMPTION OF GUILT WHICH LEAD TO THE HOLOCOST,SANCTIONED BY A PEOPLES WHO TURNED THERE BACKS,WHO TO THIS DAY CANT EXPLAIN WHY????????? ARE WE HEADED THERE AND WHO'S NEXT ?????????? DO we just need someone to HATE.GIVEN what is being said here. Should i hate all white people or view them with suspecian seeing how the actions of militia's against blacks in this country mirror those of terrorist. Those organizations still exist and have gotten bigger.WHEN are you going to target them or is that ok ???????? Innocent muslim women and children have been targeted and hurt,is that OK?????????? aRE WE BACK TO YOUR RELIGION,RACE GETS YOU TARGETED FOR VIOLENCE WITHOUT DUE PROCESS?????????? I ASK AGAIN IS THAT OK WITH YOU ???????I dont think it would be if it was happening to you,or if it was your children ,wife, mother, father etc.

When we can advocate that a person cant serve there country because ........we are going backwards.........my uncles from tuskegee would turn over in there graves. I find these stances adhorrent to what we sopposedly stand for.I wonder if any thought is really given to what we are saying........and how it comes across to others.......

-- Posted by lamont on Sat, Aug 6, 2011, at 3:53 PM

OK LETS JUST CHANGE SOME OF THE WORDS FRQUENTLY USED TO JUSTIFY THIS PERSECUTION............NOT ALL WHITES ARE KLANSMEN...BUT ALL KLANSMEN ARE WHITE........DOES THAT SOUND FAMILAR???????LETS GET REAL .........nobody is saying everyone is innocent, but we should not be targeting people because of ther religion or ethenicity, dress etc Presumption of guilt usaually brings about the selffullfilimg prophecy, and that means innocents get hurt.......SO THEY CAUGHT ANOTHER ONE....GOOD THEY DID THERE JOB......tHE MAJOR IS A BAD EXAMPLE BECAUSE SOMBODY DIDNT DO THERE JOB !!!!!!
