The drama over the debt ceiling that has gone on over the last few weeks in Congress can best be described as a John Paul Sartre play -- theater of the absurd.
Or perhaps it has been more like a farce. In the end, by the skin of its teeth, Congress managed to avoid economic catastrophe -- even though some Tea Party members (including at least one presidential candidate), seemed to think that economic Armageddon was a good idea. The politics of polarization that have dominated the last ten years in Congress have demonstrated how difficult it is for anyone to achieve compromise these days, even though that's the foundation of how our system of government is supposed to work. The federal budget is enormously complex, and some of the simplistic solutions that have been proposed originated in simple minds. We need a little more of Congress putting on thinking caps, rather than a jester's hat. As part of the deal approved at the last minute yesterday, Congress guaranteed we'll go through this again -- before the next election. We can't thank them enough for that. But at least it pushed the Casey Anthony case off the front pages. In fact, all they actually "accomplished" was irreparable harm to the nation's standing as the "gold standard" of the world's economy. Despite all our problems, until this self-created crisis occurred, U.S. federal government securities were still considered the safest investment on the planet. The compromise included passing a "law" that will "force" Congress to do what it should have been doing all along. No points here for lawmakers passing laws to force them to do what is right. It also called for a bipartisan commission to look into further means of controlling the spiraling national debt. But such a commission had already been created by the president early in his administration. The final report, the plan of the "Gang of Six," which included Idaho Sen. Mike Crapo, outlined a comprehensive plan to draw down the nation's debt. As long is it is adopted in full measure, not picked apart and adopted a la carte, it would work, even if it meant some tough decisions. But Congress ignored it after it was completed and rejected it after it was proposed as one of the compromise plans in the current crisis. It included items that were anathema to ideological zealots in both parties, such as making adjustments in entitlement programs and raising income by closing tax loopholes. So the work now "mandated" by Congress has already been done -- and rejected. This does not bode well for the new "super commission" the debt ceiling compromise requires. Voters should count on all the "penalties" for failing to come up with a plan to kick in -- just before the elections. In the end, this was a political posturing joke. But no one's laughing. WOW, you blame the Tea Party and they are new to congress. Shows how left you lean and the one thing we know about the left is they like free speech unless you have a different option then them. I also like how the democrats are calling for bipartisanship; where was this when they crammed the healthcare bill through in the dead of night. Not they only call for bipartisanship now they only control two thirds of the problem (Senate and White House).
I do agree that Congress created this mess by not doing their job both Republican controlled (2000-2006) and the Democratic controlled congress (2006-2010).
I'm sure nobody (except the congress) would agree that their benefits and pay needs to be reduced before one cent is reduced for any Veteran, active or not. I feel that if you should not get rich working for your country. Unfortunately Corruption starts as soon as they step foot off the plane in Washington and take the oath that they quickly forget.
I wonder if I could raise my personal dept ceiling, heck I still have checks even if I don't have money. I would even take a vote with my wife.

This is the second time that I can remember that, The line about Obama saying "they'll have to sit in back of the bus" was mentioned and it had been proven untrue again...
The bad joke is that for decades WE have been sending 537 people to Washington who don't have a clue when it comes to balancing a checkbook!
Is spending out of control? Of course it is.
Is not raising the debt limit the answer? Not if you can sit down and rationally look at the mess we are in. Who out there is willing to take personal responsibility for shutting down 40% of the government? Don't forget, what we are borrowing covers not only the interest on the debt, social security, medicare/medicaid, it also covers appropriations approved by the house of representatives. So where do we cut 1.5 TRILLION immediately? Any answers? Who's program is going to get shut down? If the interest, social security, Medicare/Medicaid, and the military are off limits, then we have ZERO dollars to spend on anything else. I'm sure this won't be a very popular post, but at the end of the day, facts are facts!
Should have more been done? Absolutely! Can more be done before the next election? If you think that can happen you are still suffering from the insanity that has gripped this nation for decades!

It doesn't matter which party controls what, they are all incompetent! Just look at the FAA situation. The airlines are ripping off the consumer because they can. That is made possible by the lack of action by the congress, who have decided to go on VACATION!

That whole list plus anything else you can come up will not even come close to 500 BILLION. Deficit spending is going to be a fact of life for awhile.
The only way, at this point to avoid deficit spending is both spending cuts and increasing revenue. At that point we are only treading water. To pay off the national debt even over 20 years will require increasing revenue to the point we have 1 TRILLION dollars a year surplus. PERIOD! Do the math. To believe that somehow extra revenue will appear like magic to the extent needed to generate the 1 TRILLION dollars a year need is worse than believing in the tooth fairy.

The reason I ask is, IF.. huge IF! our joke of a government were to entice businesses like cisco back to the U.S. from Ireland by offering them lower corporate tax rates than say Ireland does, wouldnt we be at least getting SOME percentage of tax revenue out of the millions and millions they make and pay approx. 16% corporate taxes to IRELAND?
Just my simple mind and simple math but 10% of something is always better than ZERO %.
Add to that the fact that IF they were to start moving assets and production home for the tax cost savings wouldnt they CREATE MORE JOBS HERE TOO....?

Cut the Politian's pay by 50%.
Limit them to two terms, and no retirement...ZERO, ZIP (Lets see who does it for their country and not to get rich.

Cut all Food Stamps, Welfare, and other give always.

Unemployment: I agree to a point, you get what you put in. Once that is gone so is your unemployment. Three years is a scam, to many people (I know some) don't want a job as they can make more part time under the table and still get 3-4 fishing days a week.
Stop all fraud, if you are caught defrauding the government you spend 20 years in a hard labor camp or you can explain to a mob of 200 tax payers why you ripped them off.
Use e-verify, anyone caught housing, transporting, or helping ILLEGAL LAW BREAKERS...this includes people that invaded our boarders also as they broke the law. Gets 20 years in the same hard labor camp (picking food at the farms the politicians say only illegals will do). Businesses caught hiring any illegal's will loose business to the government. The owners and their families will lose all their houses, cars, bank accounts. This will stop them from hiring illegals.
Every will have to pull their own weight...no free rides.
All the savings will help balance the budget.

Your still nowhere near what is needed to even begin to hit a balanced budget. How often have we heard the justification for tax cuts is that it will result in increased revenues? We are talking closing a 1.5 TRILLION dollar deficit. Your whole hypothesis is built around the " If we build it, they will come. " theory. Just ask every city that bought that story when they gave tax breaks etc. to build stadiums. Just ask Ada County, when after they gave Micron a major tax break to bring jobs here, and then Micron laid off 50% of their employees and shipped those jobs overseas or to other states. If you cut spending by 750 BILLION, you still come up 750 BILLION short. Just where is that going to come from???

As you recall those surplus years were at a higher tax rate all the way around. Remember the justification for the Bush tax cuts? At the present rate the surplus is going there will be a equal to to the tax cuts. Not a word about paying down the debt. Not a word about a rainy day fund.
If there is a balanced budget amendment adopted, we will have no choice but to quit borrowing money.

I understand that the millions and millions of tax dollars we could collect by enticing those companies BACK to the U.S. STILL won't make up for the TRILLIONS wasted, BUTTTTTTTT the added jobs, the added taxable income from them, the spinoff jobs created by those newly employed people, the houses being built for them... etc etc etc THAT is how you expand an economy.
NOT BY MAKING THE TAX RATES SO HIGH THAT COMPANIES CHOOSE TO OPERATE OFF SHORE SO THEY CAN STILL SHOW A PROFIT FOR THEIR SHARE HOLDERS.
In regard to companies that have taken their operations overseas, perhaps if some of those companies U.S. employees had been given an opportunity to accept a wage and benefit package that was relatively equivalent to the wage the company now pays their foreign employees, the workers here in the U.S. may have been able to remain with the company. I don't subscribe to the belief that the only reason companies send jobs overseas is due to the corporate tax rate. Cheaper labor is a powerful incentive as well.
On a side note, those companies that are competing globally expect our government to intervene when they perceive that the practices of their foreign competitors are unfair in some way. The investigation, negotiation and litigation can go on for years. In the meanwhile, who pays for that government intervention on behalf of those companies who have sought relief?

That's fine with me.....from what I know of the Amish & Mennonites, they are good, hard working moral people.
I've not yet heard of THOSE folks, (or any Quakers, for that matter), running around with dynamite vests, blowing up market places and school buses.

BOTTOM LINE freedom of religion means ANY religion, the ONLY restriction to that is if practices within that religion violate the law of the land. (they come to the U.S. that means OUR LAWS).

I will try to find the video link later today when not so busy and provide it here but I watched a video clip not that long ago of a muslim gathering taking place in the Detroit area and of course a couple christian groups decided to exercise THEIR freedom of religion and speech to wander the streets during the gathering passing out literature and interviewing people. For their efforts they were PHYSICALLY and VERBALLY assaulted, all caught on video.
How many times have you seen an Amish person jump down off their carriage and thump someone with a video camera? LOL
I don't think the Amish have camera's, but I do know they make a lot of money off dogs. Dogs they don't care about, dogs who live in wire cages and get NO vet care and are very much neglected. Sharia law in Florida was a civil case that a judge intervened to decide a dispute.
The Sharia law in Texas isn't being practiced they have just introduced a bill to ban Sharia law there.
