Honoring their service

Posted Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at 9:41 AM

Few communities understand the meaning of Memorial Day as much as Mountain Home.

The vast majority of people in this community have either served themselves in the nation's armed forces or had a family member who served. Few of us have gone untouched by the demands of our nation.

When someone here offers a simple "thanks" to a servicemember, it carries with it the full recognition of the sacrifices that comes from military service. It's a simple word, one we don't use often enough, but when it comes from a member of this community it is more heartfelt than anywhere else.

We should thank, however, not just the men or women in uniform, but their families as well.

If the job our servicemembers do is difficult, it is equaled only by the stress, anxiety and need to "carry on" at home by those left behind when they deploy into dangerous war zones. The wives and children of our troops bear as great a burden, perhaps sacrifice even more, than those our nation sends into harm's way. So this week we honor all who serve, even if some aren't in uniform.

Great post.

Let's not forget the Vietnam vets. I've told far too many "Welcome home Sir, and thanks for your service." who had NEVER been told that. Today we service members ARE appreciated by most, but these folks got spit on, and almost forgotten about. Thank you ALL for what you have done.

We should be a grateful nation for all of the military and their families.

It is a sorrow in my heart that the Vietnam era Veterans were treated so badly. Too little too late in some cases, we are honoring them now.
