Libyan actions fall shortPosted Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at 9:01 AM
America's involvement in Libya, adding yet another war to its list of combat zones, undoubtably saved the Libyan people from a bloodbath.
At the request of the Arab League, the United Nations passed a resolution that virtually gave carte blanche to the U.S. and its allies to intervene in the Libyan civil war. At literally the last minute, allied aircraft tore into Kaddaffi's armor and artillery at the outskirts of Benghazi, averting the massacre the Libyan dictator had promised. But with all of the allies declaring no ground forces will be used, any swift resolution of this conflict is unlikely. In fact, the political and military command structure of the allied effort appears to be murky, at best, and the rules of engagement we are using will not force Kaddaffi from power. That will be up to the rebel forces and they simply aren't capable of taking on any organized opposition of the government forces. A mob of rebels armed with AK-47 automatic rifles and handguns cannot conduct effective operations against an organized army equipped with heavy weapons. Short of a palace coup, which may or may not solve the problem, all we've been able to accomplish, and all it looks like we intend to accomplish, is to give the rebels a little breathing space. We've simply created a pause in the civil war, but nothing we have done or said we will do at this point is going to end it. The rebels will need to be rearmed and trained. That could take months, at best. And since the allied forces have indicated they won't be doing that, it would almost certainly have to fall to the Arab League, which doesn't seem at this point to have the moral fortitude to go that far. Our military forces have, as usual, performed brilliantly, but as much as intervention was undoubtably the right thing to do -- on a moral and humanitarian level -- it doesn't look like this was well thought out at the political level. In fact, we seem to have boxed ourselves into a position guaranteed not to solve the long-term problem. No one seems to have a clear "end game" plan right now, and like the other wars we've been fighting, this one looks, unfortunately, like it is going to drag on for far longer than anyone can guess at this point. America should never have got involved in this civil war. Just like our civil war, someone wins and someone loses with no outside international involvement. It is not up to America to decide how Libya's war should be fought. If the Libiyan rebels don't have the weapons or organization to win this fight, they shouldn't have started it until they were better prepared. We (America)are just adding to the list of reasons Arab Nations dislike us.
I won't get into that old "2nd Amendment tirade".............but there IS a VERY SOLID reason why the Libyan citizens are being mowed down by the bushel.
Only Gaddafi's "military and police" are legally allowed to own guns. The liberals HERE have been preaching that same philosophy for DECADES now.

The Libyan's against Qaddafi are ill-equipped because the government will not allow them to arm themselves. There are many in the US that would do the same thing to the American citizens who can otherwise legally obtain arms. That could put honest citizens in the same situation the Libyan "rebels" are faced with today. In regards to concealed carry, any place that does not allow a citizen to legally carry a weapon has to be able to regulate that restriction at the point of entry -- like the courthouse. If not you can easily end up with a Virginia Tech-type incident. I'm not forcing my opinion down anyone's throat, just stating it.

It's a matter of record...........look up "anti-gun legislation in America, past and present" (or anything else along those lines)........look at all the proposed bills and actual bills over these past many years..........and see for yourself WHERE THEY HAVE COME FROM.....and by WHO.
There's a good case for "discrimination" as well-------------Cigarettes for example, kill more people than guns EVER have, AND they addict our young folks.......but you don't have to register THEM when you buy them.
You never see any signs at an airport, school, post office, or federal buildings and installations saying "NO CIGARETTES ALLOWED ON PREMISES."
No president ever wanted to put a FIVE HUNDRED PERCENT SALES TAX on your "smokes." nor asked for a cigarette sales ban within five miles of any school.
If you CLUBBED or STABBED a "home invader" to death in the middle of the night, defending yourself during a break-in-------it's self defense. But in Illinois, if you used a GUN, it would have been YOU who would be prosecuted! Thank goodness THAT didn't pass, but GUESS who PUSHED it?
Hey, I actually STAND with your party on things like pro-choice, some of the educational issues & such......but on the gun issue, I know what I'm talking about, because we've had to fight the Kennedys, Feinsteins, Boxers, Schumers, McCarthys, Clintons, Kerrys and a "SQUADRON" of others for YEARS now. This has been an age-old struggle.

Not everybody should have a firearm, just like there are many who shouldn't be allowed behind the wheel. Not everyone is mature and/or responsible enough, and aren't even safe with a glass of water.
However, there ARE enough of us out here who DO, and are highly skilled, that I believe the government is afraid now to actually PUSH anything. We have kept vigil---watching OTHER countries surrender their rights and pay the price for it over the years. We're "dug-in" now, and the feds know it.
Additionally, there are a lot of law enforcement agencies who will NOT cooperate with any confiscation attempts.......and THEY plus the military are steadily growing in "oathkeepers."

I depend chiefly on ME. As we've discussed one-on-one, I would NEVER follow some 90-day-wonder lieutenant into a combat situation today. I've survived incidents both military and civilian.....on what I know, and have been trained to do. "Zook relies on ZOOK!"
Also, as we've discussed, I'd have been COURT-MARTIALLED before I'd EVER have taken any orders from some foreign commander. MY allegience is to OUR country. Screw the rest of them.....(just the same as they look at US). On the same scale, I will not obey any AMERICAN "civil authority" that isn't Constitutional.

Nationally, there are WAY too many different things happening one right behind the other. We get focused on the "runaway lawmakers of Wisconsin", then the education cuts become the hot topic. It shifts to the "nullification" issues in different states, then the crap breaks out in Libya, Congress has gone HOME, Obama's ordering strikes from Brazil while Hillary has gone across the OTHER ocean.....nobody even knows who's in charge over there, NOW ANOTHER batch of congressmen have "run away" to keep from having to do a union vote in THEIR state (Illinois or Ohio I think), so now our attention is being diverted to THAT, and Congress is upset that the U.N.'s directives were followed without THEM ever even being consulted.
Personally..........I don't think ANYBODY back there has an actual handle on what's going on. Even as gasoline is fast-approaching $4.00 a gallon------we're still handcuffing our OWN oil companies while giving BILLIONS to BRAZIL THEY can drill.

When Reagan hit Libya, it was in retaliation for that nightclub bombing that killed some Americans. We had a REASON for THAT one! And HE went through OUR people----(Congress), NOT the U.N.
What we are doing TODAY, is sticking our nose into someone else's affairs, taking lead from the U.N.-----no Americans have been attacked-----and Congress (who would have to APPROVE the millions being spent ALREADY), was never even consulted.

When you give an "Executive Order" ALONE, to send troops into harm's way, and don't have time to wait for Congress...........you need to be responding to an attack against US!
A civil war in another country, does NOT constitute some kind of emergency in OURS.

But this recent Libya action SHOULD be PROOF for all FUTURE elections, that NOBODY should be allowed to run for the White House WITHOUT having served on Active Duty.
You should KNOW first hand what our young men and women are up against before you send them ANYWHERE!

The "rules of engagement" probably aren't much different than they were for US in Vietnam. You were supposed to get shot to pieces before you call back someplace to get "permission" to DO anything about it.
And if you got sniped at from some village where civilians are living (and often used as human shields)-----well, you probably had no business being there anyway. Winning the "hearts and minds" was worth the body bags.

We weren't at war with Iraq for 9/11. Bush had no right to commit troops into the wrong country. And I SAID so.
We ALSO weren't at war with Libya for any reason, so there was NOTHING "RETALIATORY" about our going into LIBYA. Obama is just as wrong as Bush was. And I SAID so. The two of them TOGETHER don't make a real leader.
You're forgetting though.........U.N. resolution or not......Bush DID have CONGRESS, AND the bulk of the American people "on-board", before he did ANYTHING.
CONGRESS was NOT included on this one, and once AGAIN in our history, we're doing the "lion's share" of the work.....spending some MORE millions or billions-------(hopefully we don't LOSE anybody), and when it's all said and done, we won't even get a quart of oil in "liberation re-payment"..........just like with Bush's wasted effort. We'll just get the bill for it.

ALL presidents are held to higher standards because they supposedly REPRESENT all of us.
They campaign HARD for our votes, "mud-sling" the other guy, make all kinds of promises, and when they get elected, the spotlight is upon them, and the people expect them to make good.
George bush was president from 2001 to 2008, and for eight years, everytime he did something the Dems didn't like, they got onto him like "ugly on an ape". He was called an idiot, stupid, clumsly, a war-monger, a MURDERER, he was compared with Hitler, the late-night comics RAVAGED him, people thought it was funny when he got those SHOES thrown at him, the political cartoonists had a FIELD DAY with him, there were all of those "Days Left in Office" calendars, your side of the aisle went after him like a dog after a bone, Lamont. Maybe not you personally..........but the left went after him with a vengeance.
Obama WANTED this job, campaigned brilliantly for it. He and HIS congress aren't getting the job done either. Just like with Bush--------people are upset. He promised more change than he can ever deliver and like with Bush...........just like with Bush.........people are getting onto OBAMA now, and you DEMS don't like it.
There are still some out there who think the criticism is because of his color, but it is not. Had Hillary won it, she'd be under the same fire right now, if things were going the same way they are.

Barack Obama danced the danced, he was pushed ahead, embraced by the media and the Hollywood stars. He sold himself well to the public, while against the RINO McCain, he ran virtually unopposed. By the time the media got finished, he was almost being tauted as the "Second Coming."
His inexperience became immediately evident. he was pushed, pulled, ear-bent, mis-led-----besides what he came up with on his own. He's in way over his head. The party used his photo to get his signature and VETO stamp. Do you really think those old "career snakes" back there got him nominated, because they thought he was ready to LEAD?
He makes the mistakes he does, because he doesn't have the "Time in Service" or the "Time in Grade." But he was the POSTER who had the charm and oration skills to go WITH it, that would hopefully sell a "new generation of voters."
Your congress needed a reliable hand on that fountain pen, to push some of those age-old agendas. They aren't loyal to him, and many of 'em have "bailed-out" when things got warm.
They USED him, Lamont, and they'll run down the mooring rope like rats as the ship starts to sink.
As for the "crap" he's catching from OUR side? Half of it is from the decisions that have come out of the White House.........and the OTHER half, unfortunately..........is because of his being number "Fourty-Four."
And after eight solid years of "Bush-Ripping, name-calling and degradation"..........Number "44" had better do it a LOT better than the "bumbler" he replaced.....we'd better SEE those jobs......SEE the debt CUT (not added ONTO), and a dozen other things.

That same year, then Senator Joe Biden told a group of Iowa Democrats that he would PERSONALLY lead impeachment proceedings against any president who launched an attack against any country that do not present a direct threat to us, without congressional approval.
That's what I meant a few posts ago when I asked the open question, "are they making up their own rules as they go along?"
When an incoming president, congressman or senator raises his hand and takes that oath-----I fully expect that individual to take that oath just as seriously as you & I have. No exceptions.

"greed" you should have watched 60 minutes tonight, some interesting info came out on tonight's show. Everyone is always crying about how the evil "rich companies" are taking their business overseas and taking jobs with them. WHY???? how about because the US right now has the highest corporate taxes in the modern world... Somewhere near 35% when in countries like Ireland the corporate tax rate is closer to 12% thats right less than a THIRD of what it is in the US.
The CEO of CISCO (they make networking equipment and VOIP phones) Was interviewwed on the show and pointed out why HIS company and so many other's (google, Intel, GE, etc..) have moved so many assets and jobs overseas IS that obscene tax rate.
The ones who are "greedy" are the share holders in those companies (YOUR NEIGHBORS) People don't buy stock in companies as a charitable contribution, they buy stock to make a profit and many do that as a retirement investment.
Thoughts to consider, not trying to bust yours or anyones chops just putting info out there.

Overall though, I think EVERYONE should be taxed at the same rate............the same percentage of what they make. Let's say it was 10% (which we all know it isn't........
I make 100 bucks GROSS, the tax me for 10 of it. Some corporation down the street grosses 100,000----they pay 10,000

The massacre of thousands is OK as long it is in the name of humanitarian aid? The coalition bombings killed the aggressors from the Libyan Government that were threatening to kill thousands of aggressors to the Libyan Government. I guess I am confused by the facts. There is no threat to the United States or any of its allies by the events in Libya; the country has no value to the U. S. Why are we taking sides in a civil war?
The Libyan military is defenseless against the coalition technology; they can offer no effective resistance. It's like an AK-47 vs. a tank, an RPG vs. artillery. The facts will make you scratch your head won't they? The decision to spend millions of dollars on this effort boggles my mind almost as much as Obama being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

I am not saying anything about your writing style, your spelling or your all capitals; I am saying that you have not mentioned anything constructive concerning the subject matter in Kelly's original blog. I bring this up to you because you seem to be the one that will not let up. You two have become just like a couple of 6 year olds: you called me a name: uh huh, you called me a name first... I find this sad because you both seem to have informed opinions and have shown the ability to bring them to the table. I try to find the opinions in these blogs that will make me think; help me see the other side of issues.
Lamont...... I have read and followed all the comments by you and others. Every since you showed up here to comment there has always been race, anger, and the anger is shown by the CAPS on most of your comments and you have been told that before but continue. I could care less about your spelling and grammer, we all make mistakes including me and I have done my share. When it comes to name calling you want to stay right at the top of the list and say you never do that but your comments say otherwise. Also you say you always use the persons ID when commenting to them, sure doesn't look that way from what I am seeing. Maybe if you get that "chip" off your shoulder you may find there are alot of good people commenting on here. Maybe its time you look in the mirror and quit be so one sided, everyone opinion counts not just yours.

This is part of my conundrum, why did we choose to be involved in Libya and not Syria? My personal opinion is that Khadafy is Obama's Sadaam; he wants him for some reason. The Syrians fight alongside Al Qaeda and they harbor Al Qaeda training camps, seems like they would be the target of choice. If any country needs a change of leadership it is Syria. For all of these reasons; I don't think we will go to Syria.

The assuies have been flying the F-111C for alot of years and even been to MHAFB a couple of times on a TDY and they purchased some of the F-111A's when we retired them not sure of the tail numbers but 7113 was one of them. The C model with the aussies has the long wing like the FB-111A did.
It would be great if WE started getting some oil FREE (as in "BARTER") from some of these countries we are "liberating" from dictators.

Eagle-Eye.......the article I read was in an aircraft magazine Lamont gave me yesterday about the Australian 111G models being retired.
That could very well be I am not up to date on what the Aussies are flying now or the past few years but it was the C model when they were here, for all I know they took a combo of C's and A's and come up with the G but I don't have a clue on that.
I worked "A'S and "F's" for a long time, and THOSE were enough for me!
Yep I worked the F first then the A and had my fill of them. I was here pulling stand by every other nite and weekend after the F-4's left. Was here when the first F111F arrived and it sure was nice to see an aircraft brand new from the factory that we were going to get to work on. Stayed while they build all 4 squadrons then was off to Germany and back to the F-4E for 3 years and then back to MH and the F-111A which was in sorry condition after coming from Nellis to here but as time when on finally got all of them flying again. Also was here when the first EF came back and retired before they retired the F111 all history now.

According to what I can learn, those permits with the exception on ONE, have NOT been approved and they can't drill without permission.
It also takes 7 to 10 years from locating the right spot, to getting the equipment out there, actually drilling, setting up the piping needed, refining it, and getting it to the consumer.
One of the oil engineers they interviewed this morning said if Clinton's guys hadn't gotten the ANWAR area shutdown, we'd have been pumping some of our own for about 4 years by now.
If it actually takes that long from the permits to the gas stations, we can't AFFORD to wait until we're out, or even close to it.
But I still think a bushel of wheat for a gallon of oil would be the way to go, if we're gonna continue to trade with the Arabs, especially after all we've done for them.
I think that would be more than a fair way to reimburse us for the money spent and the lives lost, from ridding them of tyrants.---------and you really CAN'T put a price on human life.............especially when it was for someone else's country.
The Congress should have INSISTED on that, before they ever gave Bush the go-ahead to go into Iraq. (which ITSELF was wrong). But we DID get rid of Saddam for them, and the LEAST they could have done, was "fess" up some free oil in exchange.
Monetary alone......we're almost a half Billion into Libya NOW, and if we DO succeed in getting rid of Khadafi (or better yet KILLING him), we should get something in exchange as well, and this congress should INSIST on that even if Obama doesn't.
