We've often railed against the politics of hate, which has seemingly become pervasive.
Logical discourse and reasonable debate have given way to demonizing opponents. In part, that may be because, lacking logic and reason to support their position, it's the only tool left to some politicians and pundits. The shootings in Arizona have launched a national call to tone down that rhetoric. If that actually happens, it will be a good thing. But it's likely to disappear with the next big story to fix the attention of the public. Too many politicians and pundits make their careers and livelihood on venom, so the only thing that will really stop it is to reject them at the polls and quit listening to the radio and TV talk-show hosts that advocate that poor excuse for dialogue. It's up to us, as individuals, to bring about that change. Some people will take this as an excuse to rail against gun control. But we find it interesting that one of the heroes of this massacre, a man who rushed into the shooting scene and helped subdue the gunman, was himself armed with a concealed handgun (and held the proper permit to do so). He said he didn't pull his gun because he didn't want to add to the chaos and terror of the moment. Which shows that it is possible to be a gun lover and still be smart. He didn't use the weapon he obviously carries for self protection in the midst of an incident when others might have considered self protection paramount. Not all gun lovers want to use their weapons at the first chance. Some actually think first. Others believe our elected officials should now get special police protection. No, they shouldn't. While not unknown, this was a rare incident. Elected officials need to be able to walk among the people they represent without armed barriers between them and the people. Even most presidents, where the danger is highest and unfortunately real, often express the wish that they had less protection, not more. When you live in a democracy, you have to accept some of the risks that come with the freedoms we enjoy. Let us not get too carried away with the "message" from the Arizona shootings. The cold, blunt reality is they were carried out by a nut with a gun. Nothing more and nothing less. Crazy people are going to do crazy things and there is very little anyone can do to prevent it. Ronald Reagan once said: "We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions." This tragedy began and ended with that psychopath, nobody else. Not the state, not with the citizens of that state, not even with his PARENTS!!!! This was the lone act of a deeply mentally disturbed INDIVIDUAL. Leave it to the left leaning media and liberals to try to politicize this tragedy. Very disgusting! Is there nothing safe from political manipulation anymore?
Overreaction needs to apply to the media as well. Within the first hour or so after the shooting, the "lame-stream" media was running rampant, trying to tie the shooting in with the Tea Parties, because they had opposed some of her views. They were desperately hoping to tie the "right" in with that.
So because it was a mentally unstable person that did the shooting we should continue all the Hot and Negative Political Rhetoric?

I really liked him. He put US first, built and kept a strong military, bombed the "bad guys", and told "Mr Gorbechev" which way the wind blew.

Iran released the hostages, Khadafi went into hibernation for YEARS after he was bombed. North Korea didn't show THEIR butt either, and we all know what "Mr Gorbechev did!

I very much appreciate your thoughts on Ronald Reagan. He, too, came into the presidency at a time when our country was fraught with challenges. The best thing he did was to act in America's BEST INTERESTS! Not what's best for Europe, for the Middle East, etc., but what was in the best interest for America.
And the best thing I loved about him, you NEVER had to second guess that THIS man was a TRUE LEADER!!!! Wish we had a man like him in office today.
A HUGE disappointment to ME was George Bush Senior...........old "Kind & Gentler Nation", and what was that OTHER one???...........oh yeah, "A Thousand Points of Light."
Bush Senior was a wimp, and a HUGE letdown, considering he had eight years to study and take notes. George W. was no better.

Our country was in pretty darn good shape at the time. America had her world respect back, people were back to work, and Reagan won RE-Election by a margin of 49 states to ONE...........an indication that even the Democrats as a whole didn't have any gripes to speak of. (49 states to ONE is almost a SHUT-OUT! No "hanging chads" there!
Things hadn't been all that good under Bush Senior when Clinton took the reins, but Congress DID change hands in '94, and a lot of GOOD bills crossed his desk for signature, that eventually led to that SURPLUS we all remember.
Personally, I do not look at Barack Obama as our first "black president." I look at him as our 44th president. That's the way HE should look at it. No president will ever be all things to all people. History remembers the accomplishments, not the image. If he's worried about how he LOOKS as the "first black president", he's in for a harder road than he's already had.
Willie Mays was probably the greatest center fielder who ever lived, because he never took his eye off the ball. From the first pitch to the last out, he was all business.
The GREATEST pressure on Obama is his own party. He was YEARS away from being ready for a job of this magnitude, and his party KNEW that. But they knew ALSO that his charisma and just being the "first" would rally a LOT of people, who were already sick of Bush. The time was right, and a win would give them ABSOLUTE control of Washington. So, whatever it took.
Obama's inexperience would FORCE him to have to listen to the old carpetbaggers. If it backfired on them, "no biggie".......the PRESIDENT will catch all the media heat. It has historically ALWAYS been the "President's" fault!
They used his face and charm to get the White House, then started coming up with all of this crap that has INFURIATED most of this country, then they hid back in the shadows and let the "new kid on the block" take all the FIRE!
If Obama fails as the 44th president (or as the first BLACK president, if you prefer).......it will be the fault of his own PARTY.

Last year, when things started going "south", one-by-one, they started to "bail-out" on him, trying to save their OWN careers. Isn't there supposed to be some decorum at a memorial service? This isn't a concert or a sporting event. Obama's words are too late. The damage has been done. Why could he not say this shouldn't be "one more occasion to turn on one another," and to "do so with a good dose of humility" on Saturday. "They bring a knife, we bring a gun," "get in your neighbors faces"....words uttered by Obama in the past. I was out in the "boonies" for awhile yesterday and didn't hear the speech, but it MUST have been pretty good if Krauthammer was impressed. He's not a hard right-winger like a lot of us are, but it takes a lot to get HIS "nod of approval" on something............so it must have been good.

If you live long enough, you'll attend a memorial service for a dearly departed soul.
Unless you're showing up to celebrate the defeat of an enemy, the proprieties of the memorial point to solemn behavior...respect for the dead by honoring their life. Etiquette anticipates empathy and respect for the grief suffered by the surviving friends and family. Memorials serve to strengthen those who are left behind to endure the challenges of mortality. Eulogies are typically delivered by people who knew and loved the deceased.
What I saw the other night was an abomination...a so-called eulogy interrupted at least 50 times by the applause of an audience, (not a collection of friends and family); a political demonstration as heartless as that conducted by those wackos who protest the funerals of fallen servicemen. The message mattered more than the purpose of the event. The applause was for the speaker, not the eulogy.
It's been said, "Either you have class, or you ain't got none."
By his actions, the President of the United States brought discredit upon himself by centering the focus of the event upon his presentation, rather than on the memorial.
Politicians, like diapers, need to be changed. Likely, for the same reason.

You know Lamont, one of the reasons I stopped hunting several years ago, is because there ARE too many people out there who tend to shoot at whatever moves. I've been shot at ENOUGH in my lifetime! My wife & I both like to hike in the hills on nice days. I always carry a large caliber handgun for bears, cougars, snakes, whatever, but knock on wood, I've never had to "unholster" on anything.
Playing jazz at a funeral is actually considered an honor in some places. I remember seeing the funeral march down the street in New Orleans when ol' Satch passed away. I thought that was VERY proper!

It's funny, I've just read over all the comments from this article. Do any of you even REMEMBER what the article was about? It was about NOT OVERREACTING to a horrible tragedy. I put up the first comment, it was a quote from Ronald Reagan, one of the greatest presidents this country ever had, and do you know what followed? Rants against him, rants against Sarah Palin, a complete aside on JFK, the race card being pulled, more bashes on Palin. All these comments don't even speak to what the original article's message was. See what I mean by saying liberals respond in knee jerk bashing fashion to everything that they don't like. Truly a sad statement on where our country is going.

Palin is going to be bashed from every corner of this country. It is important for her to be demeaned, because she gathers big crowds wherever she goes, and the left is SERIOUSLY concerned about her, especially if she decides to run in 2012..........which I personally hope she doesn't, as I would like to see Mike Huckabee in there.
But they are scared to DEATH of Palin, why ELSE would they waste so much time and energy trying to destroy ONE woman, with so much else going on in this country right now? Palin's not even a threat in 2012. The GOP isn't going to leave anything to chance this time. I think it'll be Huckabee, Romney or Pawlenty.
But that's cool......if they want to waste time going after her, it'll just help whoever we DO nominate.

Much has been made over those "crosshairs" on Palin's map, but they conveniently "don't recall" their old CNN show "CROSSFIRE", where that same symbol was used EVERYDAY!

I believe the federal govt. should keep us safe and secure while WE pursue our OWN happiness, NOT to allow the federal govt. to tell us what that happiness is. I believe in free enterprise and free market. I don't believe any company or corporation is "too big to fail". If you fail, in this beautiful system of ours, another will be in the wings ready to pick up the slack and smarter for having seen where others have made mistakes. I don't believe in bailouts. A lot of people AROUND him, though, have been screwing this country for THIRTY YEARS................they know EXACTLY what they're doing, and getting some fresh, new, exciting "window dressing" in the Oval Office was all they needed to start "writing their own tickets."
The DNC knew two things for absolute............Barack Obama, more than Hillary, would pull every minority vote from every corner. They ALSO knew that McCain was a RINO, and even with the addition of Palin-----he would NOT have a conservative base he could count on.
The odds were good......very good. And if Obama could win-----and if they could manage to keep both houses, they could run wild for at least TWO years unchecked. And they did a lot of damage, ESPECIALLY in the closing weeks before they lost 60 people.
No, I'm not defending Obama by ANY stretch........but he didn't do all this crap by himself.
All these social problems are hitting home now too. They just announced 5 minutes ago, that the state taxes in Illinois have just jumped 66%, and corporate taxes are slated to jump 45%. This is the president's HOME STATE. I guess the money for the social programs, healthcare, welfare & unemployment have to come from SOMEPLACE, eh? And STILL, the idea of CUTTING THE SPENDING hasn't occurred to anyone.
If you PERSONALLY ran out of "credir card", you'd HAVE to stop. The government merely raises its OWN ceiling and passes it on to US. So while I DO hold congress accountable, I also hold this president accountable, too. It is primarily because of obama, we ended up with a healthcare bill so monstrous, so deceptive, so costly, that none of us can even begin to fathom what it's truly going to mean for America in the long run. And I have no doubt that THIS congress will vote to repeal, just like I have no doubt this president will VETO that attempt without a second thought. This is why he's not exactly clean in this mess.

And I can point out to you many in THIS TOWN that I know personally who have milked the unemployment system to the last day rather than take a job that pays a penny less than what they were making. THERE ARE jobs out there OPEN YOUR EYES AND LOOK FOR THEM! The questions I have for you lamont are in regards to the construction industry and costs. Do you know for a FACT that the price of sheetrock went up just simply "because what the market would bear" ??? In that same time frame did the costs of fuel and labor increase as well? taxes increased to support yet another "feel good" program, maybe pay for more adult diapers and power chairs for people who scam the medicare system?
Our economy is diverse but no so complex you cannot trace prices back to the source. What irritates me is how you seem so quick to blame BUSH and the republicans for this financial mess yet turn a blind eye to the fact that Barney Frank in 2003 was warned about Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac yet due to HIS OWN POLITICAL AGENDA AND MISTRUST he discounted the concerns and led both headlong into the disaster that led to our current financial meltdown.

CJW I guess we run in different circles, because I know of know one in this town who is milking the system, enlighten me. I do know a few people who are on SSD for very good reason's and if you knew them you would no why they aren't working and they collect SSD. Unemployment, I know of no one collecting unemployment, but hey if you know of some jobs out there, do tell me so I can pass the word on and then maybe someone could be hired.
It took my Grandson almost 6 months to get a job in this town, he finally got one and now has had it for about a year.... He applied almost every where in this town accept for jobs that require a degree. He is besides working attending college

Do you honestly believe there is a huge requirement or specialized skill set required to "fill the spot" as a LOT ATTENDANT???? or auto detailer?
That is exactly what I am referring to when I talk about hunger being a great motivator, the same ones who cry about minimum wage are too lazy to go take those lot attendant jobs becasue they KNOW some bleeding heart liberal will feed them and feel sorry for them.

one job opening for "Lot Attendant" 25 people apply for the job one gets hired how many didn't get hired?

Let me tell you why I never joined the military, lamont, since this seems to be such a "gotcha" for you. I am the only son of a career marine. My dad saw much fighting over in Viet Nam and is a highly decorated soldier. It was my father's wishes that I be the FIRST male in our entire family to go to college, rather than enlist. I will NEVER forget that day of my graduation with my father there. He was crying, something he didnt do often because he was so proud me. I'll tell you something else about my father, lamont. He's also the kind of guy that would never think of hanging his years of service over someone else's head to give an ILLUSION that he's a better American, a better patriot than someone else. No, he would NEVER DO what you just did, sir. My father had CLASS and DIGNITY, lamont. Something much better than the bitterness, hatred, and inferiority complex that seems to drive you. The Rumor of Reagan having Alzheimer's began the last 2 years he was in office. I'm the one as you say SPEWED about him having Alzheimer's on this blog. Here's what my spewing said

It never has been know to be factual that he had Alzheimer's while in office. He did have a psychological test done before he left office because of falling off a horse. However he started having problems with memory (forgetfulness) in the late 80's and early 90's. His Mother and Brother had problems with it to, they then called it senility not Alzheimer's
He didn't actually get diagnosed with Alzheimer's until 3 or 4 years after he was out of office.

NOTE : My first husband is a decorated Viet Nam Vet and we had 3 boys together out of which all 3 went on to college. Two got their degree's and one not only got his degree but joined the Idaho National Guard which helped him pay for College. I am very proud of him. He now lives in New York with his wife and 2 boys and is still in the Guard as a Major....

I think this string has gone too far past when the train jumped the track. Folks are claiming to offer no offense, and are trying to be witty; but, they are failing on both counts. As such, I can't separate the pigs from the fools and I really like to wrestle...I'm just not willing to get dirty or be confused for a fool.
