Usually, we don't give much credit to the Tea Party movement, but the state organization of that conservative philosophy has put forward a good idea -- at least in principal.
Tea Party candidates elected to the legislature have indicated they will push for a reduction in the state sales tax, noting -- correctly -- that it disproportionately lays a heavier tax burden on the poor and senior citizens trying to survive on a fixed income. The legislators of that movement want the sales tax reduced to 4 percent from the current 6 percent. To make up for the loss in revenue, they propose eliminating a large number of tax exemptions that are on the books. They don't specify which exemptions, and therein may lay the rub, as the devil is always in the details, but over the years special interest groups have convinced the legislature to create a huge body of specialized state income and luxury tax exemptions. It seems reasonable that many of them could be eliminated, generating significant revenue to the state. So, in principal, their idea has merit. The question is, can they identify -- and get removed -- exemptions that won't hurt the middle class and small businesses, while still raising the almost half a billion dollars in revenue their sales tax cut would cost. This won't be an easy year for the legislature. The economy is slowly starting to turn around, so revenues will be up slightly, but the state must restore education funding to at least 2009 levels, while maintaining other vital services. There isn't much fat left to cut from the state budget, so looking at eliminating some specialized tax exemptions is a good place to start finding the revenue needed. There is no question the tax code needs to be simplified, at both the state and federal level, and that means special-interest exemptions have to go. This is an idea worth exploring. Lets hope that the legislature understands that cutting, and spending more thoughtfully should not be a fluke. The landscape has changed and moving forward all levels of government need to keep in mind that the money they spend is not theirs. Government has ingrained misconceptions and assertions on what is money well spent. Those assurtions have set the vocabulary for, and frame, the debate concerning spending. It is virtually impossible to broach the concept that schools or government in general still need to be optimized and/or cut more without being told that you are going to kill baby jesus.
there is a better option, but im not going to say it cause everyone would probably flip out.

I always find your blogs and editorals very well thought out and insightful. You are spot on with this particular insight of the tea party movement.
There is a little known movement out there called the "coffee party" who is supportive of our government, but at the same time, not blinded by it. Centralist in nature as most Americans are.
Unlike the Republican tea party who's slash and burn everything that spends money, the coffee party looks at each and every social program and sees the value of those programs and the long term effects of cutting funding for them.
Not every gov't program is worth the money and should be looked at or elminuated, but the same applies to those much needed gov't programs that provide for those who cannot...
I will pray for our new congress and hope they see the value of those much needed programs so we don't have a gov't who cares little for it's citizens like we did during the great depression.

Whatever our state legislature does, I hope and pray they leave public education alone, and stop publicly funding charter schools, which is a waste of tax payers money...that money needs to go to our public schools which keep declining to the lower half of all states...but with Mr Butch Otter in power, I can't see it happening.
We can continue to pour more and more money into education with no effect. Until our schools produce results with what they currently have they don't deserve anymore to waste. Until there is no tenure for bad teachers. Until more kids can read at grade level than can catch a pass.
What you don't understand is the shift toward fiscal conservatism has only just begun. Better join that coffee party so you'll have something to calm your nerves as accountability for how taxes are spent moves to the forefront. Elected officials that aren't good stewards of our tax dollars will not be our elected officials. Wasteful social spending liberals have awakened a huge segment of previously quiet conservatives. No more publicly funded pisschrists.

The Tea Parties spoke pretty clearly this past November, and if the "newbies" want to keep THEIR jobs, they had better listen to the people who put them in there. The DEMOCRATIC voters are the largest impediment though. If they were SERIOUS about wanting to fix things, they would have replaced some of their OWN bums in the primaries, like the republicans did. It's the Harry Reids, Chuck Schumers, Barbara Boxers, Dianne Feinsteins, Charlie Rangels and Barney Franks of this world who have helped suck the piggy-bank dry.

We FIRED a bunch of OUR crooks in the primaries. If the left would have the foresight to replace some of THEIRS, we WOULD have an overall more-effective Congress to represent US, instead of their own bankbooks.

"Party members" need to seriously check who they choose to support. It is no longer a "given" that all democrats or republicans think the same way as those who vote for them. Twenty years ago, NO Republican would have supported DADT. FIFTEEN of them just DID, including Ron Paul, who I had once supported for president.
You need to WATCH these guys..............all of 'em.........seems the longer they're in there, the more corrupt they get.
They need to NOT be wasting time, either. One of the first things this new Republican House is going after, is to try to repeal Obamacare. Ain't gonna happen. It's a noble cause, and the right thing to do, but they'll NEVER get it past the Senate, and even if they DID, it'll CERTAINLY be vetoed at the White House. It's a waste of time until 2012, and they COULD be working on other things.
The tea parties aren't going away, though. This wasn't some "flash in the pan" movement, and they be stronger than ever by 2012, and will more than likely be watching the guys who just got elected even HARDER than those who were replaced.
One thing about Obamacare is, it brought attention to the health care problem in America. The last time any thing was attempted was when Hilary worked on it. Obama might not have got it right, but now with it being out there maybe we will get a health plan that will work for everyone.
The repeal of Obamacare is what a lot of the freshman ran on. Its not a waste of time to do what your constituents sent you there to do.
The tea party isnt the reason for the dems getting kicked out. A line has been crossed. The egg cannot be unscrambled. The people will no longer tolerate waste, fruad, abuse, and over taxation. Both reflublicans and demorats mistake what is happening. Its about taxes and spending. That's it. Its not about your guns or your god. This voting block will not come together behing conservative so called values and won't give their hard earned dollars to freeloading people or organizations like schools.

Let us talk about our Medicaid system for a moment. Have you read about all of the fraud? People on Medicaid get paid transportation to and from "approved" medical appointments. Do those of you with private insurance get that? Next. People on Medicaid pay NEXT TO NOTHING for their medication. Do those of us with private insurance get that? Food stamps. Do we really need to go there tonight? SSI disability/SS for people WHO HAVE NEVER WORKED A DAY IN THEIR LIVES, have worked VERY LITTLE or are not even citizens! REALLY????
So Obama brought to light the problems with the healthcare system? Interesting. The problem with healthcare in the US are the drug companies, the insurance industry, hospitals (and what they charge for their "services"), lawyers and bad doctors that continue (or are allowed) to continue to practice medicine when they should not. That, in a nut shell, is what is wrong with the system. Until these things are "FIXED" nothing will change.
I, for one, am tired of paying for lazy people to sit on their butts and live off of me and those of us that work and pay taxes. Do not have multiple kids if you cannot afford to feed and take care of them. Pretty simple!

Maybe there's a good reason why people are on Medicaid and pay next to nothing for their medication. How about you Missy, since your husband is in the Military don't you get a break on your meds, even thought your not in the Military?
Did you think those people on SSI have some health issues, maybe mental problems and who will hire them?
If a person walking down the street all of a sudden has a seizure goes unconscious and falls to the side walk. A good citizen just happens to come upon him and calls 911 not knowing if he is an illegal, or a non working person on SSI or a homeless person or a person who makes $100,000 a year. Paramedics come and cart him off to the hospital. He's still unconscious so they can't get any info from him. They run tests and determine he needs to stay in the hospital for a couple days. After a few days he regains consciousness and they find out he has no insurance, because he has no job, who pays the hospital bill? Does the county step in and pay from their indigent fund, or does the hospital write it off? He can't work because he has a serious health problem

I guess you have a bleeding heart for all of the people in this community alone who abuse the system. Did you see the news story on all of the Medicaid fraud recently? Many of the people on Medicaid have made the CHOICE not to be productive members of society. They spend all hours of the day working the system AND ARE PROUD OF IT. I was around a lady today who is proud of the fact that she has been on welfare for 20 plus years. She knows all the "tricks and gets whatever she wants." She could work if she wanted to but has not worked a day in her life. She has 2 kids...we pay for em! She is 3rd generation welfare. She was taught to be the way she is today.
MsM, I pay THOUSANDS in out-of-pocket medical expenses each year. I know what it is like to have medical bills ruin your life. I have worked since I was able to count money and I have always worked hard. I have had many jobs that I did not want to do but did it because I had to pay bills. Sometimes you have to do things that are "beneath" you to make it. That is life.
I am not against helping people---NEVER have been. However, insurance for people who are not citizens is STEALING from the people who are in this country legally and pay taxes. SSI was never meant to live on. Further, if you have more people on SSI than pay in...those who have paid in will be up the creek because there is more going out than what comes in (COMMON SENSE).
Get back to me when you are still alive and SSI is broke. Get back to me when you get sick and the Government demands that you sign everything over to them so they can "take care of you." And get back to me when you get better, you get sent home....wait...you now have no home...and you have no place to go, no money and get turned down for assistance but have worked for most of your adult life---and "qualify" for NADA!
The system is broken. That was the point. Adding more "programs" is not going to fix the problem. Clearly you just do not get it. I am glad your son will soon have insurance but at what cost is the question. Take your rose colored glasses off.

Not everyone gets those chairs for free.... You have to qualify to get them free. Same as SSI or SSD getting those is not easy sometimes you have to apply more then once or even hire a lawyer...

I do respect and understand that you have have all these life's experiences, believe it or not I too have seen many things in my travels throughout the world and the US. I have been witness to abuse and torture of citizens of other countries by their own military or police, I saw a couple guys beat half to death by military police then they were hauled into a small block building and the two gunshots to follow finished the job. I have seen hunger and misery on a scale I pray you NEVER witness, not what you see on TV with Sally Struthers but the real thing in person where you can hear smell and almost taste the misery.
I too believe in helping others and know the value, if nothing else it always helped me feed my personal need to try to make up for my past actions, kind of my own private Karma.
What I do NOT believe in is allowing con artists and scammers take from me in the name of doing good while they enrich their own lives and leave the majority of those they promise to help with nothing. THINK ABOUT IT IF THERE WERE NO HUNGRY POOR HELPLESS PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO WOULD THEY SHOW YOU VIDEOS OF TO TRY TO MAKE YOU CRY AND OPEN YOUR PURSE/WALLET TO GIVE MORE MONEY.
You can do much more good with your own money than the government EVER could with it, and sitting back while they lie to you and take it in the name of "doing good" helps no one. So many examples of this kind of behavior are out there look at Al Gore and all his whining and crying about how "WE" should all do our part for the environment while he rode around in a caravan of gas guzzlers and lived in a mansion where the utilities AVERAGED over FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS a month.

We all want to help our fellow citizens of this big blue marble in space, all I would ever ask is please don't be fooled and suckered in by those who prey on good hearted souls such as yourself.
When you give your money freely to all of these different causes, it's called a "personal donation."
When the GOVERNMENT uses OUR TAX DOLLARS for all of these frivilous ventures, it's called "misappropriation and THEFT."
You see MsMarylin.......if you wanted to write out a check for a couple of hundred dollars to help feed stray cats in Guatemala, that's fine with the rest of us. It's YOUR money to do with as YOU see fit.
But the government doesn't HAVE any of its "own money." They use OURS, and those tax dollars are to be used for the benefit of OUR country. Says so in Section 8 of that old parchment Washington doesn't use anymore.
I don't have as much issue with the taxes, as I do with WHAT THEY SPEND IT ON------------and then they sit around thinking up ways to tax us some MORE!
We're expected to live on a budget, but the government ISN'T. I have a real problem with that. I really do.

I would like that............but not everybody shoots or even LIKES guns...............so it isn't FAIR to make EVERYBODY few for the wants and desires of a few. (The WECRD thing here in town is a paramount example of that).

Sadly, the BEST thing we all COULD have done for our country, would also have been the EASIEST. But instead of any physical bravery, it would only have required the THOUGHT and the FORTITUDE to walk into the booths and make a clean sweep of Washington. Both sides.
But we, as faithful little family-historied-party-members, have not been able to bring ourselves to DO that.

I was at a Marine Corps League function about 4 years ago, and the topic at our table was Iraq. One of our League members commented that George W. reminded him a lot of Reagan. I WOULD NOT HAVE HAD A PROBLEM BRINGING THIS PERSON DOWN........NEEDED TO HAPPEN........MY PROBLEM WOULD HAVE BEEN SOMEONE WHO STARTED SHOOTING AND DID MORE HARM THAN GOOD...everyone is not proficient with weapons and there use. Just because a person has a license to carry doesnt make them profecient.The thing that bothered me in the weapon debate is the 30RD clip.I CANT JUSTIFY THAT IN MY MIND. Oh, absolutely, a level head has to go with a round barrel. Had I been there, I'd have picked the right opportunity when nobody was standing on the other side of him. I shoot regularly enough to where my first would be enough---wouldn't be a SECOND gun just "spraying around."
As I understand it though, everyone was so huddled together, it probably wasn't safe for that citizen to do anything else OTHER than to tackle him to the ground.
I have a Concealed Carry License as a lot of folks know, and what puzzles ME, is how he could have kept a Glock with a 30-round magazine HIDDEN where it didn't bulge OUT somewhere for somebody to SEE it, before he ever got it out?
What bothers me also, Lamont, is that....(and you can COUNT on this).......there'll be groups looking to SAVE this clown from being punished, and the "judicial" system will keep him around for the next 40 years on our tax dollars, while the NEXT idiot with a "statement' to make, plans how to achieve HIS "fifteen minutes of fame."

As a hardcore lifetime gun owner, I have never believed in giving the Feds an INCH, because they usually WILL take a mile. But even this RADICAL OLD RIGHTWING EXTREMIST BAZOOKAMAN here.......doesn't see the need for a 30-round magazine in a pistol............for ANY reason! I think 10 is plenty. My own 45 autos only hold seven, and that's MORE than enough if you can shoot. My carry-guns are revolvers and they all hold SIX.
What is REALLY needed here.....is what has been needed for YEARS...........a TOUGH judicial system!
Because it is customary now for so many "deals" to get made, a lot of these characters are "copycats" who see things like this as some way of getting attention........picture in the paper........making the 6 o'clock news...........those infamous "15 minutes."
Very few EVER find the "death penalty" today, and the criminal has virtually lost his fear of the judges. Grand Theft Auto is almost a "misdemeaner" today, when we USED to HANG horsethieves.
