In 10 weeks, the voters will go to the polls for the off-year general election -- an election that many pundits believe will be a referendum on the president's policies.
No president does well in their first-term off-year election. Even Kennedy and Reagan, arguably the two most popular presidents of the last 50 years, suffered reverses. Part of that was due to the fact that problems they'd inherited from previous presidents hadn't been fully fixed, and part because people didn't like some of the programs they'd pushed through Congress. So any losses Obama suffers have to be considered as a matter of scale. And the scale of house and senate seats he's going to lose could be significant, far beyond what is "normal." The dream of Republicans, and they have a shot at it, is to regain control of the House of Representatives and get enough senate seats to restore their ability to filibuster bills. But even Republicans are concerned about the elections, with a number of incumbents falling in their own party primaries, largely to more radical Tea Party candidates. So even a "victory" by Republicans may be a pyrrhic one. Party unity could be shattered. The result would be to only add to the stagnation in Congress. In Idaho, two of the three incumbents for national office -- Rep. Mike Simpson and Sen. Mike Crapo -- seem destined for easy re-election, having brushed aside their primary challenges and facing disorganized and underfunded Democratic opponents this fall. Only incumbent Rep. Walt Minnick, a Democrat, may have anything to worry about, despite having cast a lot of "Republican" votes during his first term in office. So Idaho won't be the test the election will be in much of the rest of the country to let us know where the voters stand on Obama's policies. Let's take a quick look at where we think he stands. He's ending the war in Iraq, but realistically, this was pretty much the timetable Gen. Petreaus had set during the Bush administration, so we don't give him too much credit for that. He's amped up the war in Afghanistan, but his timetable for withdrawal will make it hard to achieve all of our goals in that country. At best he gets a C- for his military foreign policy, and that may be generous. He got his promised health-care reform through Congress, but it wasn't the bill most of us were looking for. It will help many individual Americans to get insurance, but it did nothing to control costs and its impacts, especially those on small business, have yet to be fully felt. Furthermore, we expect it will be heavily revised in the next Congress. Let's give him an incomplete on that one. His response to the oil spill was only marginally better than Bush's response to Katrina, and exposed a bureaucracy that was not only incompetent, but possibly corrupt as well. Add that to the poor work of health inspectors in the food chain and he's really got egg on his face. Call it a D for oversight of the federal bureaucracy, and he gets a barely passing grade only because he's promised reforms that might actually work. On the economy, he inherited a massive mess and the only hope was to throw money at it. Doing nothing would have been worse. We avoided a depression but seem stuck in a recession, and frankly, the "fight anything Obama proposes" attitude of the Republicans hasn't helped fix this mess. There haven't been a lot of alternatives proposed, except to keep giving the rich tax cuts. That really won't help, because the first rule of the rich is never to invest your own money in your business (borrow it or sell stock and put enough cutouts in the way you don't personally get hurt if it tanks). The famous stimulus money helped, but didn't really kick-start the economy like everyone hoped. The Wall Street reforms were largely a good package of laws, but they haven't done anything to get the banks to start loaning money to small businesses again, and that's the one thing that's really needed. Bailing out the banks left a bitter taste in everyone's mouth but the alternative was to see a series of massive bank failures all across the country, which would have been worse. Still, in the end, it's all about jobs, and they're still not coming back like everyone hoped they would. And the long-term debt, which probably had to be incurred to save the short-term economy, is really, really scarey. He gets a C- on this one for simply avoiding disaster, but at a cost that may create another one in the future. Once again, that grade may be generous. As a leader, he probably gets a B. He can still inspire crowds, but the body of work he's produced so far doesn't inspire quite the adulation he generated during his campaign. Overall, however, it's not an impressive report card -- average at best. The question now is what viable and better alternatives will actually be proposed by candidates getting elected this November? He gets a "C" & a "B" for government takeovers, mandates, lawsuits against a state trying to PROTECT itself (which the Feds will NOT do), bowing and apologizing, EXPANDING an ALREADY too-large of a government, LIFTING the debt ceiling for both Fannie & Freddie, turning his "inherited" trillion-dollar bebt into THIRTEEN now, which he still blames Bush for..........unemployment now into the TWO-digit figures.
Yes. By all means. Wonderful. He and his entire alumni CERTAINLY rate a "C" and a "B"!
As for Republican alternatives..........you have to be allowed INTO "closed doors" first, and then be LISTENED to............which does not fit into the Democrat plan.
And you libs conveniently never mention those grand and glorious UPSWING economic years, where Bill Clinton has forever been enshrined as the master of building surplus........how it was ACTUALLY accomplished!
Clinton's Congress was under Republican control from 1994 to 2000............you remember that.........Congress/ where bills are drafted & written, and legislation is introduced.
All Clinton had to do was read & sign what came across his desk. THIS administration reads NOTHING.........it just signs in darkness.
So, do Republicans have better ideas?..........look a little closer at Bill Clinton's regime that all of you lefties love to praise.
Study your government. It's the CONGRESS that does most of the good/and most of the damage. Spotlight is always on the president for the praise or blame.
The GOP is actually playing it smart. Shut-out and not listened-to during this socialist-agenda takeover, they've elected to sit back now, and let the all-knowing "committee-of-czars" drown itself in its own corruption. They aren't putting their "fingerprints" on ANY of this, and they know that as the mid-terms approach, the Dems are NOT going to be able to point fingers this time.

Just as Obama has done in Afghanistan. He was AGAINST every surge, but now that he sees it working to some degree, he's been over there photo-op-ing with the troops, trying to ride in on their coat-tails, as if to so............"look what WE've done."
The Democrats back there are hypocrites. When the GOP refused to aid and abet this fleecing of America..........when they REFUSED to go along with these mandates........when they REFUSED to sign things without first READING them............they were shut out and called "un-cooperative"
Now...........the Dems are crying that the Repubs haven't come up with anything of their own.

It was just announced this morning that some professor has just been granted $700,000 of OUR "stimulous" money to develop a JOKE TELLING machine that will automatically feed into the internet-------------something about "improving morale."
That $700,000 alone, creates at least ONE job!
Also-----------6.9 MILLION to do some restoration work at Dry Tortogus National Park,............and $554,000 to replace windows at the Mount St. Helens Visitor Center.
People are OUT OF WORK, and here are yet three MORE examples of how our tax dollars are being spent by this administration.
Obama (yesterday), now says he has "another plan" to boost the economy. He insists it is not another "stimulous", but it WILL mean another "increase" in taxes. Just brings a "patriotic" tear to your eye, doesn't it?
He's supposed to make a big announcement this next Wednesday. Just can't WAIT to hear THIS one!
Not ALL "gloom & doom" though.............there ARE obviously SOME real Americans walking around today-------------a major building contractor in New York, who built the new Yankee Stadium (among other things), has pledged not only to REFUSE work, equipment or supplies to build this new mosque. but is also gathering up every OTHER contractor he can to JOIN him in this effort.
Holder will probably sue HIM too.......then blame Bush for some kind of "conspiracy."
And we lost ANOTHER 54,000 jobs last month.

If amnesty is granted and the borders are left open, who do you suppose all of these millions of illegals are going to register and VOTE for in 2012?....the "kind and generous ones who LET THEM IN.

Yes, secutity HAS been beefed-up finally. They're sending about 30 guard troops a month to take over admin positions to free up a few actual troops on the border.
Yes.........active duty troops "every 6 feet" probably WOULD be possible, if we brought 'em all home from all over the world and just put 'em on OUR borders...............as was originally INTENDED 235 years ago.............instead of being the "world's policeman".

Did you know that a county Sheriff..........ANY county Sheriff, actually has more power than any Federal agent? It's a fact.........goes back the the days of the high sheriff of Nottingham.
A county Sheriff is an ELECTED official who does NOT work for the Feds, and is answerable only to the voters in his county. That's why Arpaio basically tells both the Feds and the liberal Phoenix mayor to STUFF IT, and is ALSO why, incidently, he gets re-elected by a LANDSLIDE everytime he runs for re-election.
A lawsuit against that NY contractor will never work. He has the right to turn down business if he wants.
Decency alone should guide this "mosque" business. Nobody is trying to deny the Muslims to build a mosque. They already HAVE them all over the country.
But it is WRONG to build one in the immediate vicinity of ground zero. It would be like the Japanese building a war memorial next to the sunken Arizona at Pearl.........or Taco Bell building a huge restaurant at the front gates of the Alamo.
When you consider the fact that MANY foreign countries won't even allow a WESTERN church to exist ANYWHERE in THEIR countries...........I don't see where we are being so 'evil." about this.

Sorry man.....but reality check here, beyond the election/honeymoon period. A first-term young Senator with NO executive experience, is a "babe in the woods" when all of a sudden, he has the whole country and WORLD at his door.

There's obviously something in that bill that has a "stiulous II" tint in it, because it is NOT like the GOP to oppose assistance to the business community.
And anyway............why don't the Democrats just PASS it themselves, like they have EVERYTHING ELSE. They haven't included or needed the Republicans for anything YET, have they?------from the bailouts to the stimulous to Obamacare----------can't they get enough support from within their OWN majority now?
Privatizing Social Security might not be a half-bad idea. Since the GOVERNMENT has been running it all these years, they have first taken from OUR paychecks to pay for S.S.............and then they have ROBBED that fund for their OTHER projects for DECADES now. They've PROVEN that THEY can't be trusted with it.
If it were privatized, we would voluntarily put money into an account that the Feds could NOT get their sticky hands on, and it WOULD be there later when we needed it.
Basically, those who seek to privatize S.S. are people who don't trust this government, (and with good reason).
Also........under a private system (IF it's an honest one), the ILLEGALS can't tap into it either! Think on it, Lamont-------the Dems and Repubs BOTH.........have NOT been "good stewards with our money, especially that money which was TAKEN from us--------FOR us. Now, have they?
30 Muslims out of 3,000, eh? That's certainly "majority enough" to let them have their way on the mosque issue. Keep in mind that Muslims don't value human life as WE do. They'll die for "Allah" and those "72 virgins" at the drop of a hat.
I doubt anyone will get hurt if that mosque is built further away.............why is it that WE are always the ones expected to make the concessions? And WHY are we paying for that Imam back there to travel the world? Why are WE paying for that?

Joe Arpaio is one of the very few officials left who is actually LOOKING OUT for us and enforcing the law that the feds will NOT, for political reasons. He shouldn't be tampered with.
And what say you.............about the "amnesty" for 2012 votes? What other reasons could they have for WANTING to grant amnesty, and BLOCKING Arizona, when it is clearly their job to PROTECT our borders? Any thoughts along those lines?

Shame, ain't it? It's taken a trashing of our economy to "slow down" the influx at the borders..............because the FEDS won't do it, (although they'll sue anybody who DOES take a stand, eh?)
You're right about coming down hard on those who HIRE illegals.............but there's two things wrong with that:
1. If our borderes were properly sealed to begin with, they'd never get the CHANCE to hire illegals.
2. The first time anybody DOES drop the hammer on some "under-the-table" employer, they'll have the wrath of the entire Democratic party, the ACLU, the Sierra Club and a dozen other organizations screaming "foul", "human rights" and a load of other crap that favors the intruders.
Ever notice.......it's almost always the "activists" who do little else in life that CONTRIBUTE to anything, are always SPEARHEADING these "causes" against their own country.
I was reminded of that in D.C., when I saw and photgraphed "Archie Bunker's chair in the Smithsonian.

Well, what did we do BEFORE we had Social Security? We learned to SAVE, didn't we? As I understand it, S.S. was put into place to make up for those of us who didn't have good savings skills, so there WOULD be a little something at the end, which as we know SINCE....BOTH parties have robbed from.

One of two graves I specifically went to Arlington to see, was Jou Louis.'
Joe Louis Barrow was the Heavyweight Champion of the World from 1937 to 1949, and is revered by many (including myself) as the best who ever entered the ring.
Joe fought everybody, ducked nobody, knocked out opponent after opponent. He never bragged on himself, and was adored by fans from age 8 to 108. Joe served in the Army during World War II and didn't wait to be drafted. They had him wear a uniform, make USO appearances and still defend his crown. He was a Technical Sergeant when he got out, and it is marked as such on his headstone today.
Joe Louis was a Champion both IN and OUT of the ring. Joe Louis was an American.
What the IRS did to him was SHAMEFUL. While on active duty, he fought two particular bouts, in which he DONATED his entire purse to the Army Relief Fund...........and the other to the Navy Relief Fund. Years later, the IRS came onto him for "back-taxes" on those bouts. Louis, doing what HE could to contribute to the war effort, had merely donated that money to two very worthy charities.
But the IRS being the IRS..........said that as far as THEY were concerned, he had been PAID for those two fights, and if he wanted to give the money to charity, that was HIS business, but he STILL owed the tax money.
Because they waited until interest and penalties had stacked up, (typical for THEM), he was way behind by then, and even had to come back from retirement later to try to pay it off. They seized almost everything he had, including the $667.00 his mother left him upon her death.
He finished his life working at a Las Vegas casino as a door greeter while those filthy bums from Austin and Fresno continued to pursue him. Finally, Frank Sinatra (a huge "Louis Fan") threw a big benefit in Las Vegas and they got the IRS out of his life. Sinatra also paid for the elaborate headstone at Arlington, after Joe passed away.
Throughout it all, though, Joe Louis never lost his dignity, he loved people, he loved kids, and while he wasn't overly fond of the Treasury Dept, he loved this country.
He was never involved in public scandles, never blamed every else if he happened to lose a fight, loved kids, and emerged above the rubble, in-spite of all the crap he'd had to deal with.
Joe Louis was truly what an American is.........in Bazookaman's book.........and in the books of a multitude of generations.

By the time I tested for tech, there was no shortage of Phantom questions, because at that time, it WAS "the Air Force fighter." Sort of like with your F-106----------if ya never worked them, you were screwed. Same for ME with the Phantom.

My guess would be 3 reasons:
1. The people have finally had enough of "business as usual."
2. Obama was gonna "Change" all this "business as usual" crap. "Transparency".... A lot of folks bought into that.
3. The unread bills, backdoor deals, immigration, the coddling of terrorists, this mosque business, more taxes, jobs contining to go away, etc.
People are fed up, and while a lot of this would probably have happened anyway under this crooked Capitol Hill bunch, Obama happens to be the president at the moment , and that's always where the spotlight is.
You may notice that nobody is really trained on the president. The immediate focus is getting RID of incubents in D.C. and in the states as well.
Right here in Idaho, Otter's job is no longer safe, Simpson's neither, and we came extremely close to getting rid of Corder, which probably WILL happen next time around. All three of these guys are Republicans. It matters NOT to most of us, what party they're in. It's time to start getting rid of the "rift-raft."
The Town Council is under voter attack right now too............(did you hear their latest scheme? about the "permits for garage sales?").

One of the guys I play music with is a liberal. We agree on NOTHING politically, but when we're on stage together, it's all left behind and all five of us are a team, working toward the same goal, putting out the best music we can for the audience. This particular dude is a white guy, yet I have a LOT more in common with YOU, than I do with HIM.
Oh, there's no doubt in my mind that you're a patriot. Most men, 18 to 27, do NOT have the guts or fortitude to put on a uniform and serve where they might be killed. Those of us who are willing to sacrifice for our country, are a class unto ourselves, are we not?
As I've said before, up at Khe Sanh, we all lived in holes next to each other, we all wore olive drab, we all bled red, shared the last box of C-Rations and the last canteen of water.
At the re-unions each year, all of us who can make it (black, white, brown----------)are together. We sit, eat, drink together and "swap lies" as they say.
There is a brotherhood in the military (in the Marine Corps anyway), that doesn't seem to manifest itself as well in civilian life. Hopefully, a lot of that is changing, because in the end, it's going to be the US against the government, and since we're ALL being robbed and lied to...........we ALL are eventually gonna need to stand together.
The Tea Parties do not see you as part of any problem.............unless youre a crooked politician. CNN would like you to think that, but I've never been to a rally YET, where anyone has made a racial comment. If you read the protest signs we carry, you won't see anything with the "N" word on it, or anything that even LEANS toward it.
Fact is..........if somebody DID bring a derogatory sign to one of our marches, he'll probably be beaten up on the spot. As things turn desperate, the leftwing loons turn more and more to the "race card", even if they have to "invent" something.
The Tea Party movement has been dedicated to getting RID of the Washington thieves from the onset------------nothing more, nothing less. It has never been about race, or Obama being black. Most who oppose him, oppose his politics, not his color.
The left has worked tirelessly to discredit the Tea party movement in any way it can. They even attempted to insert some of their own troublemakes at a Seattle rally carry racial signs. It was discovered beforehand though, and when word got out that anyone doing that would be dealt with physically, that Seattle rally went peacefully, as they all have.
But as Nancy Pelosi says so often............."whatever it takes."
It's a shame that because they have no other defense for their lies and corruption, they have to try to make a racial issue of it........try to turn people against each other to divert attention off the actual issues.

Until Kennedy's death and Republican replacement of that Senate seat, the GOP couln't even FILIBUSTER anything. The only things that have stood in Obama's way, have been some of his own Democrats, who fight among themselves.

The first thing the government HAS to do, is STOP the wasteful, massive, unnecessary spending it is famous for.
One of the first things Reagan did, was to put a spending FREEZE on Congress. You can't keep spending what you don't have..........then admonish the voters for "living beyond THEIR means."
"Uncle Ronnie" wasn't real popular for that freeze, among Washington's "frozen chosen", but as he often reminded us, "Government isn't the solution to our problem.........government IS our problem." And he believed in a SMALL government, which is a whole lot more affordable than a large one.
You lead by example...........or few take you seriously. You can't get through to your kids about the hazards of smoking, when you're sitting there puffing on a Camel. If I take my wife out to dinner once in awhile, I don't need some Congressman lecturing me about "American greed and extravegance" while he's yachting in the Carribean on the weekends and getting $400.00 haircuts on our tax money.
