The girls made history

Posted Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at 10:28 AM

It's not possible to fully describe the pride this community has over the success of the Lady Tigers softball team this year.

Congratulations girls, you made history.

Since the first graduating class in 1901, Mountain Home High School has produced a number of fine athletes. But until this weekend, no "official" team has ever won a state championship.

There have been many individuals win state titles, and some club sports (which aren't "official" teams) have earned the distinction. But no state championship team trophy has ever found its way into the trophy case. Many teams came tantalizingly close over the years, but always missed that final brass ring.

This weekend, the drought ended, and the Lady Tigers did it in style. They stumbled early in the double-elimination tournament, making the road that much harder for themselves, but with gritty determination they pulled it out. Coach Chris Asbury and the girls deserve a parade, the key to the city, laurel leaves, medals, fireworks and balloons.

And if Nickayla Skinner isn't the conference MVP we don't know who could be. For all practical purposes she was the only pitcher the team had -- or used -- for the vast bulk of the season and the tournament. Her arm must be dragging on the ground after all the work it's had. But she's holding her head high, along with all the other members of this historic team, who now know just how intense the thrill of victory can be.

After 108 years, the Lady Tigers proved it can be done. They won't be the last Tiger team to win a state title, but forever in the history of this community, they will always be the first.

On behalf of the entire community -- well done, ladies, and thank you.

I also applaud the team. It's good to see Mountain Homeites make a name for us!
