Let him say, 'So help me God'Posted Wednesday, January 7, 2009, at 9:49 AM
Article II, Section I of the U.S. Constitution, requires the President of the United States, upon assuming office, to take the following oath:
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." Two key elements of that oath are not part of the Constitution. But every since George Washington put his hand on his family Bible, to show his commitment to that oath, and added the words, "So help me, God," those two elements have been an integral part of the tradition of the swearing-in ceremony. In fact, the selection of the Bible itself, be it a family heirloom of the president or a Bible with historic significance (such as the one used by Washington or Lincoln), is a major decision each incoming president makes for his inauguration. Now, an atheist group has filed a lawsuit in federal court to block Obama from saying, "So help me, God." And that's ridiculous. The Constitution only prohibits the government from creating or endorsing a state religion. It does not prevent any member of the government from being religious, or expressing his religious beliefs (it fact, such expression is protected by the Constitution). If Obama chooses to use those words, and place his hand on a Bible when he takes his oath, he should be allowed to do so (he will). And if any court rules he can't, then I suggest they have a U.S. Marshall standing by to arrest him when he does so. It is more than mere tradition. It is appropriate. For any president who is religious at all, it demonstrates how seriously they take the oath. Comments Showing most recent comments first [Show in chronological order instead] |

Kim, the 1st Amendment is already under siege, and we're already seeing glimpses of that as the libs are trying to shut down talk-radio. Getting Ron Paul locked out of some of the eastern debates so the public COULDN'T hear what he had to say, is pretty obvious too.
Personal opinion, Kim......just my own personal opinion............if NOBODY had brought it up during the campaign, I wouldn't have been surprised if Obama put his hand on the KORAN, and not the Bible on the 20th (but too many people will be watching him, now)
Except for ME. I won't be watching it. I'm not into porn. Rather, in "honor" of the occasion, I'm gonna go out and run a few rounds through one of my guns that he and Biden think they're going to take.
Kim.......look in your purse, or wherever you keep your change. Find a new quarter...and one of the older ones. Notice anything significantly DIFFERENT between them?
On the older quarters...."In God We Trust" is in FRONT of the President, where he can SEE it........................where is "In God We Trust" on the NEW quarter?
Kind of like "we've turned our backs on HIM", eh?
Give you another one, which has been in existence awhile, but goes back to my opinions of the U.N.:
Ever look at a dollar bill? I mean REALLY LOOK at one? Take a minute Kim, and pull one out, and look on the back.
In the large circle to your LEFT (and isn't THAT significant) one the very large word "ONE" is the pyramid with the all-seeing Masonic eye. Now....look around the inside perimeter of that circle at an inscription written in latin........"annuit coeptis novus ordo seclorum."
Know what that means?? I'll bet our local Socialist, "Jacknife" does..............ot translates to "announcing the birth of a new world order."
Stamped right THERE on our money. I'd say that EASILY 99% of Americans have no clue about that..I mean really.........who looks at a dollar bill?
Hang in there Kim. When you read through Revelations, you have to believe God isn't going to put up with this garbage much longer. There's more evil in this world today than there was the FIRST time he destroyed it. We've GOT to be taxing HIS patience! I don't think it's going to be much longer.
In the meantime though, we've got to watch this government, and be ready when the time comes.
Kelly, I agree! Saying an oath is always to God in my opinion but to speak the words outloud, does express the seriousness of that oath. Do we not still swear on a bible in court? Or has that been omitted? I'll have to look at that. Anyways, it is crazy for some group to threaten to try and have it blocked. Let see, don't we still have freedom of speech? It is because of that freedom that these people are given the right to trash all the beliefs of others. They got to tell the world that there is no God, no Jesus, no angels, no heaven and no hell. They were given the right to tell the world that 90% (give or take) of this nation are unresaonable idiots because they believe in God. Now, they want to take that freedom of speech, that they so loudly proclaimed in their favor, away from the President?
Doesn't really matter who he swears to or what he puts his hand on. He doesn't fully support the Constitution he will be swearing to protect and defend, and will commit perjury as soon as he repeats the oath.
Nobody questions these things anymore, we just accept everything around us today as "Oh well, that's just the way it is......can't do anything about it"........
.....as we continue to vote as the media tells us.
