City reacting wisely

Posted Friday, November 28, 2008, at 9:46 AM

The city is being smart in how it is handling the economic downturn.

Revenues are going to be down. No question about it.

But rather than panicking and ordering slash-and-burn across-the-board cuts, or axing employees, Mayor Rist, the city council and the department heads are doing what every citizen out there is doing -- cutting back on non-essentials, finding ways to be more efficient in the use of tax dollars.

You can always argue that this should have been done all along. The reality is, like any business or household, governments tend to give themselves a little pad and the occasional luxury.

But the city has historically been pretty conservative in how it spends its money, so there isn't a lot of fat on the bone.

The measures the city is taking now seem appropriate, and may have some long-range benefits (such as improved energy conservation).

And we are glad that, at least at present, they aren't considering adding to the local unemployment problem by cutting staff, and they're trying to help the local economy by insisting on buying locally any time the price is close, if somewhat higher, than it can be obtained elsewhere.

The city seems to have its priorities right. We only hope it, like all the rest of us, can weather this storm without having to take more drastic measures.

I find it reassuring that our local government is doing the same thing we're all doing: cutting back during some hard times.

Except for Elmore County authorities, though, it seems.
